Carpooling to save the environment and save cost!

how many passengers would you be picking up to get that amount??

 

car pool is usually 1 way in the morning.

 

let's say a passenger's monthly transport fare for going to work in the morning is $100 (premium bus standard)

 

factor in possibility of some days when car pool is not available, i think each passenger probably willing to pay maybe $50-$60 a month only

yes normally carpooling is 1 way in the morning. but nowadays u see many people queueing for taxi after work as well. If the idea of carpooling takes off, then we can convert these people that takes taxi to try carpooling for a change. If there is no demand for direct transport, Uber wouldn't have taken off and Grabtaxi wouldn't have crossed over to Uber's domain to fight for this pie. If every 2 person that takes a taxi decides to carpool instead, we are reducing our carbon footprint by half already.

 

If you take a look at those bulletins, people are willing to pay at least $5 one way for carpooling. Longer distance they might pay more also. So we are looking at at least $400 a month for 2 ways carpooling 5 days a week,

 

If we can change our mindset that carpooling is only for going to work in the morning to thinking of carpooling as an alternative mode of transport, then maybe we can really do something for the environment.

 

I'm sure alot of people here would be willing to pay more than just $50-$60 a month for getting a direct way to work. I have a friend that travels from Woodlands to River Valley to work everyday. He needs to take a feeder bus out to interchange and then change to MRT and then change to another bus to get to work. It takes him more than an hour to get to work each day and he spends more than $3 each way. He is willing to pay upwards of $10 for the comfort of a direct transport once in a while. It saves him time and effort and the cost would be less than that of taking taxi.

I look at it this way... sharing same cab can hold up to 4 people and NOT BUYING a car will reduce carbon footprint... To use carpooling as an excuse to own a car well it is indeed very refreshing

 

Yes change our mindset of NOT BUYING a car and NOT THINKING of new excuses to own a car. Sales need car, yes I agree but they are given car allowance so go car sharing...

 

We should optimize the use of cabs than buying a car and thinking of how to optimize the car to get money.

 

haha i never say use carpooling as an excuse to owe a car. What i meant was that he was undecided as the cost is high, but if he can carpool it makes it more affordable for him. You're taking what I said out of context haha..

 

well if we change our mindset and dont buy a car but we continue taking taxi, then what difference does it make hahaha

 

sales need car and are given car allowance, but why should this stop them from carpooling and defraying their cost further? As far as i know, car allowance never covers the whole amount of money you spend on the car, so why not carpool to reduce his cost even more?

 

Agree that we should optimise cabs, but that doesnt mean we cant optimise the car as well. In fact all modes of transport SHOULD be optimised

If it is a social thingy, I would see it as volunteering without expecting a return... I will drive my colleague back because I want to not expecting anything in return...

 

If my neighbour works in the area along my way to work, I would definitely drive him/ her without money...

 

Yes that is very gracious. But sadly, not everyone is as gracious as you. So the next better step would be to introduce a small fee to share the cost of the ride. It would be up to the individual of course whether you want to accept any payment. But I guess it is also to be fair to the driver that the riders provide some fees in return. Of course this can be in the form of a meal or whatever.

as a passenger, i would want to save costs and not to incur more cost to travel to work.

 

also knock off timings are usually vastly different for different people, so return trip is usually unpopular

 

nowadays few people take taxis to/from work as it is expensive. you cannot benchmark against cost of taking taxi.

correct.. the idea of the carpool is just to get extra $$.. u must be able to afford the car without any carpool $$..

Anyways like i said i'm not talking about having a regular passenger. Of course that would be good to have though. If we can broaden our horizon and mindset to not limit carpooling to just going to work in the morning, then what is there to stop us from doing 2 trips a day?

 

I totally agree that one must first be able to afford the car. Again, it does make it easier knowing that there are avenues to defray some of these cost. But i hear what you say, one must first be able to afford a car.

 

 

p.s. unlimited ride for bus and mrt is $120 a month. I'm sure that there is a good number that exceeds this amount spent on public transport every month, otherwise, why would they price it at $120?

I think we're stuck at the mindset of just having 1 regular passenger for going to work and going home from work. If the pool of riders and drivers is big enough, who is to say that carpooling can't be the next alternative form of transport?

 

Agreed though that there are not as many people taking taxi to/from work but there are 30,000 taxis on the road doing an average of 30 trips a day. That makes it almost a million rides a day. Im not even taking into account Uber and GrabCar. If the market is really so small, then how did Uber make it so big and why is Grabtaxi trying to eat into this same pie?

I guess you are more of less fixated with buying a car and hopefully able to pick up passenger along the way to work. If that is the case, then you should go ahead. Be prepared nobody will pay you $10 or even $4 to go one direction. Afterall, you are talking about carpooling, whether or not got passenger, your cost is already there. If I'm taking your car to work, I'll only give you $2. Don't care whether you drive Merc, Honda, or Kia, $2 is all I'll give. I also want to cut cost. Why should I help you cut cost? That's my question. Since you are going the same way, then my $2 already helping you. That's my argument. And also, be prepared your car got soiled with dirty shoes, leather seat get torn cause "it is not my car" mentality of many people.

haha i guess its not that easy to change the mentality but there are game changers out there that is trying this approach. you should check out tripda and Ryde... tripda originated from south america and ryde is local

I'm just curious, how old are you? I see that you are quite naïve. Sorry but to use the word naïve. You can have 1000 type of apps to calculate the cost, so long the app is not govern any act, whatever they can calculate or come up with, passenger don't need to follow. I see something here. That's you only look at best case scenario. My advise to you is, plan for the worst. You might not be able to take it when you have no passenger and end up faulting the app. Truth hurts and reality is hard.

i did car pool previously.. i only pick up passengers from my usual route, no deviation from my route. my route was actually popular until people are willing to take bus out to my pick up point.. also no more than 5 mins waiting for both sides.. if i late, passenger can just go, if passenger late then i just go... win win.. collect some money since my car previously was empty when i go office so this is a good way to get some $$ to defray the erp cost.. also ended up got passengetr to chit chat.. lol..

 

btw most of my passengers are gals... in fact all are! haha..

$180 2-way everyday is actually quite alright... but if i pay already then always full then i cant get up how? i thought they should control the number to ensure all that pay gets to have a seat?
