Personally, I feel it is not safe. For my own car, I always fit in 4 tyres of same brand, size and profile. First time I come across different size and profile for front and back.

Some say ok, some say not. I also don't know which is which.

the answer is obvious.

anything is ok when driven like a tortise and nothing happened. It is when in emergency then one realize the importance of sticking to specification.

Supersonic

the key issue is not the tyre size different

its fitting a wider tyre on a narrow rim

your sidewall become / \ as opposed to | | with normal size

you are right. 185/55 was likely on 6in rim. so now 205 on a 6in rim you will get excessive side wall flex.

all the more it shows how unprofessional one can be.... :a-t9412:

another two warning

1) improper seating of tyre bead can cause dislodgement

2) if u get into an accident, wrong tyre size can be used against u as deemed improper fitment for the car , insurer will give reason to siam

Jialat. The whole issue seems so serious. Make me worry and want to force them to rectify the issue.

I am trying to look at the T&C of the contract and see if there is any clause that can be used.

185 tyres could fit 5.0-6.5" rims while 205 tyres could fit 5.5-7.0" rims but most suitable rim sizes are 5.5" & 6.0" respectively. The selection of tyres & rims is quite flexible indeed. The outcome of fitting 205 tyre in a 5.5" rim is more aesthetic than safety. The feeling of being short changed in financial aspect in this incident is very obvious. Nexen is a cheap Korean brand but if Falken 912 is used, it is not better in terms of wet handling. We are in a world that most things are not perfect but mere compromises.

thanks for all the feedback and sharing

I would like to summarized my digestion

all boils down to who you ask and who is answering

Toyota / Boneo motor (authorized party ) : all can not except follow the original or install by them (even is not original tyre / battery)

Legal trained : just follow what is Original.(you are 100% protected by Law)

Outside service vendor like your rental company : can can no problem , all my cars running same setup. BUt when problem surfaced, Sorry my sub contractor made a mistake bla bla .

Forum members / tyre shops / workshops : assorted of the above.

Simple logic : you pay what you get ( please read the T & C)

Not like I am underpaying. In fact, I am overpaying.

Some bits of information for you.

Tyres
The following requirements must be met when replacing tyres:
a) Every wheel of a vehicle shall be fitted with a pneumatic tyre that must be of the correct width, profile and diameter as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
b) The tyres must not protrude from the vehicle body laterally.
c) The overall rolling radius of the original wheels and tyres should not be altered.
Note: Off-road tyres are not allowed for use on normal roads (e.g. slick tyres, semi-slick tyres, cross-country tyres for rugged terrain, etc).

P.S. The tyre size may be found on a label which also indicates the tyre pressure.

I would be rather worried if one of the tyre develop the cracks as it might be age related i.e. rubber hardening. Usually tyres comes in a set of 4, if it happens to one, it may happen to the rest so do check the rest as well. Also you may want to check the date code.

Many years back, I have been sold tyres that are "old". They develop hairline cracks all over.

I understand, but it is a rented car. Most companies, if not all, do that. Changing 1 set of used tyres on whichever tyres that is not usable. But didn't expect different profile.

Supercharged

I think the easiest way to shoot back this kind of errant tyre shop is to tell them can you run properly with different shoe size.

i.e. your feet is size 8. one foot wear size 6 the other size 12.

yes. but 185/55/16 is a very very odd size. so i think both shops just simply bo chap. 1st one gave odd tires which maybe would otherwise have expired. and the 2nd shop simply sold whatever stock they had on hand as long as it could fit.

Haha, this is a good analogy!

When I first got the car, it was already 185/55R16. From my knowledge, factory recommended for Vios is only up to 15".

Apparently it was a used car bought from the 2nd hand market to be used as a rental car.

But the thing is.. the rental is sourced by myself.. the company give me a budget of $2000, but I took the cheapest I can find that time.. at $1600.. I didn't expect the same car to be out for rent long term at only $1200 - $1300. Recently I found out that for $1,600, I could get an Allion with spare change.

So what I see is that the company (rental) is trying to milk as much as they can.

i think you could have sourced harder for a better deal.. for 2.2K you probably can rent a teana 2.5 (5years+ car) .. eg.

Yeah.. I did not.. I was rushing into it because it was urgent. I found a 320i recently for only $2000/month for 2 year rental
