Different tyre size and profile for front and back tyres?

Wanna check with the experts.. Currently driving a company rented 2006 vios..

Brought the car back to the car rental company as back tyre sidewall got cracks and leaking air.

Checked by a tyre shop and proceeded to change to 2 recon tires for the back.

Problem now,

Before that, all 4 tires were Falken 185/55R16.

After, front 2 Falken 185/55R16, back 2 Nexen 205/50R16.

When i asked the tire shop, they told me it is ok. Most BMW are doing the same.

I have never ever heard of this before.

Won't different tire profile and size for the front and back affect the car stability?

Need advise from the experts [:(]

It's at the 2nd floor of Sin Ming autocare.. right next to the winding up ramp.

I can't do anything since it's a rented car, but i really didn't expect they gave me something of a totally different size front and back.

Used tyres and different brand is still acceptable, but at least not a different size and profile.

seriously i would even return the car as what they did which i believe was with the consent from the rental car is unacceptable.

the whole geometry of the suspension system is wrong and it will be unpredictable in an event of emergency maneuver.

take care.

So I can take up this issue with them as a safety concern?

Because I always changed 4 tires with the same size and profile front and back.

I never ever tried such a crazy thing before on different size and profile.

obviously you can cos its a compromise on the handling of the vehicle.

just tell them you will write to lta and seek their advice whether it is appropriate or not if its done their way.

confirm they chicken out.

Shop should be sing tai Wah. Used them about 20 years back when they were at Bukit Batok. Not anymore since they moved more than 10 years back. Like the rest mentioned. Must be no size for 185/55/16. So just hum tum any size they they have in stock and can fit and tell you it's ok. Lots of rubbish shops like that around. Avoid. Edited by Mkl22

Staggered setup is more suited for RWD cars.

It is in a sense, ok for a FWD car to go for a staggered setup, mainly for looks, but its not economically feasible. You can't rotate tyres...

However, there are people who run a reverse staggered, with the front being a wider tyre compared to the rear, for FWD cars.

205/50x16 is almost identical in diameter to 185/55x16, about 610mm +- 2mm. The width is wider by 30mm though. At the rear where no turning as the front, it seems ok. The original size for Vios up to 2012 should be around 595 to 605mm. Hence the first two sizes are +1.6% ......still acceptable. With these sizes rotation of tyres front back is not advisable.

the Party to be blamed is the Car rental company and your company.

They set all the T&C for both the tyre shop (vendor) and you as their Customer

If you are worry , just raise the concern of safety to your company and car Rental company.

If no action done, don't drive the car.

Many company set the budget very low(cost control) and this car rental company is hungry for business

so you know what I meant.

But the thing is.. the rental is sourced by myself.. the company give me a budget of $2000, but I took the cheapest I can find that time.. at $1600.. I didn't expect the same car to be out for rent long term at only $1200 - $1300. Recently I found out that for $1,600, I could get an Allion with spare change.

So what I see is that the company (rental) is trying to milk as much as they can.

TS, please don't worry. It will not affect your ride in any dramatic way. It will definitely not affect your safety too since you are only using it for normal use.

As what Tenghock bro said, it differs only by +-2mm, 611.4mm (205/50R16) vs 609.9mm (185/55R16). When you turn your car the tyre slip already more than 2mm. Small deviations like this on tyres are not an issue.

Yes high end cars have differing front and back tyres. Example is use here in Koenigsegg one:1 http://koenigsegg.com/one1/

Front: 265/35 – 19” (total is 661.8mm diameter)

Rear: 345/30 – 20” (total is 715mm diameter)

You can see that the difference is so big. Rear tyres are "taller" to give a visual appeal, and also have smaller side wall so that tyre slip can be minimized. Rear tyres are also wider for these kind of track cars to have better heat rejection for the tyres when they are on the track. but ultimately, what is important is that even with such a big difference in tyre size, as long as the suspension geometry and wheel housing etc is designed for it, it is no problem.

so for you, your 2 different tyres are all almost the same diameter, so the suspension geometry setup and wheel housing and steering are all ok (somemore your bigger wheel are behind, so will not affect steering in any way you will notice in normal driving).

so dont worry! if you scared safety or stability, dont worry.

On another note, yes maybe tyre shop no stock so they give u another one. but it is not uncommon to have different tyre sizes when you change tyre (i mean all four wheels, not just two). Last time my stock car come with 185/55R15, then tyre shop no stock, so he ask if can change to 185/60R15, I say ok. didnt feel any big difference when normal driving.

Rental company save money at my expense and tyre shop no stock for particular size, go order lah....

the key issue is not the tyre size different

its fitting a wider tyre on a narrow rim

your sidewall become / \ as opposed to | | with normal size
