Little_prince Supersonic June 18, 2015 Author Share June 18, 2015 (edited) Just wondering whether joseph schooling will come back or decide to stay in USA to achieve his olympic level dreams.I won't be surprised Govt make exceptions for him to defer since he so high profile with so many patrons in high places Or maybe he can join ndu and make full use of his talent lol Got quite a few precedents like Ang ju wei and Maximilian Soh IN THE last 10 years, fewer than 10 Singaporean sportsmen and musicians have been given permission to defer their full-time national service. These deferments are often sought when the young men want to pursue their studies, training or represent Singapore in International competitions. However, rarely is approval given because it is vital to uphold the NS system's strength and integrity, by making it universal and fair to all Singaporeans, said Dr Ng Eng Hen, Second Minister for Defence in Parliament on Thursday. Also, the NS system provides for Singapore's national security and survival, he noted. These factors form the basis of the three principles underlying NS, said Dr Ng, adding that permission had been given for exceptional talents. He was replying to Nominated MP Eunice Olsen, who wanted the Defence Ministry (Mindef) to be more flexible in giving deferments. She referred to a Straits Times report last December about Mr Keegan Ng. The 20-year-old had won the Marion S. Gray Outstanding Musician Award at age 11. He wanted to study piano at the Eastman School of Music in New York, but was told he had to complete his NS first. He has since given up his plan and is now deciding whether to study accountancy or business administration. Said Ms Olsen, a classical pianist: 'As a musician, I know how vital it is to continuously hone one's skills. I think the ministry could be more flexible in granting deferments." In explaining the Defence Ministry position, Dr Ng underlined the three principles that underpin NS. First, he said NS ensures Singapore's national security and survival. This is the basis for the Enlistment Act, which mandates that all NS-liable males are to be enlisted at the earliest opportunity on turning 18. Second, universality makes NS a duty for every male, fit Singaporean to fulfil. Third, equity ensures every national serviceman is treated the same way, regardless of background or status. Also, Mindef recognises that NS involves a sacrifice from all individuals who have to postpone personal pursuits to serve the nation, he said. 'This is why we must adhere to the three principles articulated to preserve the integrity and strength of our NS system.' However, Dr Ng also pointed out that Mindef does exercise flexibility in selected situations, he said. For example, it lets students to defer full-time NS to complete their studies up to A Levels, polytechnic diplomas or equivalent qualifications. It also defers full-time NS for exceptional talents based on the merits of each case. But such talents are very rare, he added. He cited several examples such as swimmer Sng Ju Wei, sailor Maximilian Soh, violist Lim Chun and pianist Lim Yan, and added that they still have to serve NS after their deferment period. Sosaria Twincharged June 18, 2015 Share June 18, 2015 Sportsmen peak potential only till late 20s. At that age, it is still possible to fulfill military obligations. Being older, perhaps their leadership skills will also be superior. In theory it is feasible to allow deferment. In USA for example, there are ppl enlisting even in their 30s. Nothing new. But they have to tahan being recruit and bossed ard by younger people, that's all.

If there is a genius, be it music or sports, who can bring glory to the country, then let him go and attain his best potential. Come back later to serve NS. No big deal. Just a matter of sooner or later. Oh ya... I forgot... money can buy talent. Just import... Table tennis anyone?

But they have to tahan being recruit and bossed ard by younger people, that's all. I was following the recent documentary on BBC, Royal Marines Commando School. I think there were around 9 or 10 over 30s signed up. At the end, only one over 30 managed to pass, struggling too. Can see it is really tough for the over 30s keeping up with the 20s. Very nice and insight show. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/royal-marines-commando-school/episode-guide

Lycanthrope 4th Gear June 19, 2015 Share June 19, 2015 absolutely right ... got money can liao .. best replace all local talented males with foreign talents ..no headache. jobs -FTs Talents - FTs woo hooo ... That's right. We should have bought Michael Phelps before the Olympics and his 20+ gold models would have all been ours. His current networth is only 55 mil USD - I think he could have been bought for 200 mil easily. One 75 mil SGD sports school can't even produce one Olympic gold so 200 mil for 20 golds should be a good price.
Beehive3783 Turbocharged June 19, 2015 Share June 19, 2015 I think even if he wants to renounce citizenship, he still has to go jail first. Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200. I think he should have appealed and asked to be released early. I think SAF should not have been so strict with this ORD date. To miss this chance to study in Cambridge is a huge missed opportunity. He should have continued working there and renounced the Singapore citizenship. Why risk coming back? I am not sure if being detained creates a black mark on your future career in Singapore. Beehive3783 Turbocharged June 19, 2015 Share June 19, 2015 According to news reports, he wasn't the one who appealed against the 3 weeks. MINDEF was the one that appealed for heavy sentence. Mindef really want to play him out. 1 month to go before ORD also refuse his deferment application to study at cambridge. Then he came back, pleaded guilty for AWOL but he appeal the 3 week detention sentence and was given 18 month instead. :lll._.: This is very heavy handed. Would my son encounter something like this when he goes to NS next time? The law is there is protect citizens. However, if a citizen has a genuine request to defer from NS that would not affect national security, why was it not granted? I hope Mindef would clarify why they rejected his deferment application in the first place. If go DB more than 7 days you will have a jail record. SAF jail or detention different from Changi, right? Thot SAF jail no record in the mata system Ya, DB more than 7 days will have jail record in the system. I fren SAF regular, kena caught at airport for drug trafficking, go SAF jail for two years. Mata system got record leh. He must declare in job application leh. Good thing is no need reservist!!! No call up or unit assigned. AWARE will just ask one question to shut you up... Is it fair that only women have to suffer the pains of pregnancy and labour? And menses? This got me thinking about several issues surrounding NS liabilities. 1. Is NS relevant today? The world has become smaller and competition among individuals are even harder at the work place. I asked myself this question, everybody wants equality but when comes to responsibilities not everybody wants to share. No matter how small any person's contribution to the country it is still a contribution like our pioneer generation. Hence, why it is discriminatory to only make boys / man do NS. Protecting our country should not just be only one group of citizens and the rest girls/women/PRs/new citizens devoid of responsibility. The burden to the family is very high, especially, when nowadays people have smaller families and some may only have ONE child who happened to be a son. If it is still so relevant, claims we lack able body man (hence now PES C also kena do some type of combat training), why then have we not recruit the rest of the potential population pool. Beehive3783 Turbocharged June 19, 2015 Share June 19, 2015 I remember it's 7 days? So it's 21 days ah? My bad. Jail in DB more than 3 weeks counted liao. I know cos my CO last time purposely charge an offender to db until 1 day short of becoming criminal record, so he can still apply for uni studies after ord. CarPark8 3rd Gear June 19, 2015 Share June 19, 2015 AWARE will just ask one question to shut you up... Is it fair that only women have to suffer the pains of pregnancy and labour? And menses? Kawan, this is nature and this is something we cannot change. Then you should ask why men cannot be like women who carry their own water bottles (milk) while men don't have. Also, why do men need to have baby elephant trunks and two small golf balls, when we do contact sports we need to waste money and buy guards. Post pregnancy - can get few months of maternity leave and for some ... huat ah because menses pain can get MC (whether real or not, big pain or small). For us men, complain of ball pain in army probably kena throw into DB. NS, is not designed by nature but man-made. In some countries, you may not be asked just to defend but also be an aggressor. I think AWARE is smarter than that. I wont be surprise if AWARE encourages women to join some form of NS to promote nation building. ↡ Advertisement
