How can a vessel disappear? It would be fitted with various GPS tracking devices. Especially for bunker vessel, the owners will want to know where the vessel is and how much fuel being pumped, all these done remotely in the comfort of their office.

Only someone who knows where the wires are will cut them off.

From what I know, these fuel tracking system has independent GPS and UPS in case of power failures. Me currently working on a project of these various fuel monitoring system. [grin] So surprised that such vessel can disappear off the grid.

These systems could be new and those older tankers would not be fitted with them. Eg, the fuel monitoring system you refer to (is it the mass fuel meter?) is only due to be fully implemented in Singapore in 2017. The tanker is a Malaysian tanker so all the more they might not have it....

22 men on board - prayers for their safety.

the load is worth $5.5 mil.

spokesman for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) believes the missing tanker MT Orkim Harmony was most likely robbed by bunker pirates who are still trying to unload the vessels' cargo, local media reports.

Deputy director-general Vice-Admiral Maritime Datuk Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar voiced the possibility Monday during a press conference while discussing the disappearance of the Malaysian-registered vessel, which was understood to be carrying 6,000 metric tonnes of Petronas-owned RON95 fuel worth RM21 million ($5.5 million) when it went missing on June 11.

"We believe that the robbers are still looking for the logistics to transfer the oil to their client," said Ahmad Puzi, adding that he thought it would be too risky for the fuel to be transfered to another vessel due to its highly flammable nature.

"If the tanker leaked, the crew members should have managed to make an emergency call. If it capsized or met with an accident, there must be some oil spills. However, there are no such signs."

It was noted that there has also been no demands made for a ransom.

"So, the highest possibility right now is that the tanker was robbed by pirates," Ahmad Puzi concluded.

MT Orkim Harmony, which is owned by Magna Meridian Sdn Bhd, was sailing with 22 crewmen from Malacca to Kuantan and was equipped with communication tools and a positioning system.

It is understood that the tanker's fuel could last up to 22 days.

A search and rescue operation involving 1,500 personnel from MMEA and the Royal Malaysian Navy along with 10 vessels, three boats, and an aircraft, is currently being conducted over a geographical range of 50,000 square kilometres.

Possible locations for the vessel were said to be in the Vietnam or Sabah waters, Pontianak (Kalimantan), or Tanjong Priok near Jakarta.

Ahmad Puzi also theorised that the tanker could be hidden off Anambas and Natuna islands (Indonesia).

[sweatdrop] Highly possible due to Sabah earthquakes, either Island or Mountain might disappear from Malaysia Map.

I will stop going GHR for the time being [shakehead][:(]

What is it with Malaysia?

Either people keep taking their clothes off or things keep disappearing?

Naked Olympics in Penang, model taking her clothes off in the streets

and people taking their clothes off in Mount Kinabalu.

If its not stripping its things disappearing, planes and now ships.

I agree with you about not going to GHR, the last time I went there

my money disappeared.

Pray that all the missing crews are still alive and release soon, just hope these pirates have humanity in their minds.

Looks like they found the ship.

KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian naval vessel has located the hijacked tanker Orkim Harmony in Vietnamese waters and is trying to persuade the pirates onboard to surrender, promising them they will be unharmed, Malaysian maritime officials said on Thursday.

Both the crew and the cargo are safe, and the navy is in the midst of negotiations with the robbers, officials with the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said in a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia's Chief of Navy Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar said on his Twitter account that at least eight perpetrators were on board the Orkim Harmony armed with pistols and machetes.

Local media reported earlier that the Orkim Harmony had been detected in Cambodian waters.

The 7,300 deadweight tonne (DWT) Orkim Harmony was hijacked on June 11 about 30 nautical miles from the Johor port of Tanjung Sedili carrying around 50,000 barrels of RON95 gasoline, in the second such incident in the same area this month.

The two hijackings within two weeks have raised further concerns over piracy in Southeast Asia, maritime officials said on Monday.

Malaysian state oil firm Petronas told Reuters that the Harmony was carrying 6,000 metric tonnes of product from its Malacca refinery to Kuantan on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast for distribution.

It said "all necessary measures are being taken to ensure undisrupted fuel supply to consumers in the East Coast region."

Earlier this month, the 7,100 DWT oil tanker Orkim Victory carrying diesel loaded from Petronas was hijacked on June 4 in the same area and on the same route.

The Orkim Harmony is operated by Malaysia's Orkim Ship Management. On board is a crew of 22, including 16 Malaysians, five Indonesians and one Myanmar national.

Vice Admiral Ahmad Puzi, the maritime enforcement agency's deputy director general of the operations unit, told reporters on Monday that it would be difficult for the pirates to siphon off the gasoline from the Harmony as it was highly flammable and that they were likely looking for the proper facilities to do a ship-to-ship transfer.
