Finally, after having lots of problem doing cloning from my existing HDD to the SSD (default app from Samsung don't work, had to do a clean install of Windows), here is the update on the SSD after using it for 2 days.

Boot into Windows from cold start (Fast start feature is disabled) in 15 seconds... WIth fast start feature enabled, under 5 secs to boot into Windows.

Photoshop CS6 start under 5 secs.

I'm a happy geek now.. [laugh]

Should have used EaseUS. The process is very simple.

I tried with EaseUS too.. but somehow my laptop didn't recognise the OS in the SSD.. Bios detected it, but can't boot into Windows. So i gave up and did a clean install instead..

Oh... likely the boot MBR was not properly cloned. When we use the cloning feature, we have include all the partitions of the source disk. Maybe somewhere went wrong.

If you have backed up your data, then a fresh install is actually better in a lot of ways too. You don't get all the junk left over from the previous windows.

Is the Toshiba Satellite C75D-B7100 17.3" Laptop, AMD A8-6410 2.0GHz Quad-Core, 750GB SATA, 6GB DDR3, 802.11n, Win8.1 worth getting at US$300 and the HDD with SSD?

The big screen is definitely a plus. I'm not a big fan of AMD but the price seems pretty decent for a quad core laptop. [thumbsup] The rest like RAM and SSD upgrades can always do them after you got it.

PS... I hate Win8 too. Always been with Win7 as it's very stable.

I'm on Win8.1... Initially hated it too, but after using for a couple of weeks, i realised it's not so bad.. some of the new features are actually quite useful..Only thing i hated is the "start" menu..

Thankfully they brought it back in Win10

Yes, hopefully Win10 will be good. Microsoft has a habit of releasing lousy OS after one successful one. So I think need to skip Win11 and wait for Win12 next time [laugh] [laugh]

Yeah..

Like how 95 is good (compared to Win 3.1); 98 is ok; 2000/ME is so-so; XP is good; Vista is crap; 7 is excellent; 8 is crap (which they somehow improved abit in 8.1).. [laugh][laugh]

Just upgraded my wife's Lenovo U350 laptop HDD to SSD which my laptop failed to recognise.

1) Used the provided Samsung Migration software.

2) Replace HDD with SSD.

3) Booted up and all works as normal and now super fast!!!

My lost is my wife's gain. [laugh]

Ssd also more stable and last longer than normal hdd right? They have no moving parts.....???

Maybe i should have chosen ssd option for my retina imac....

The purpose of a SSD is for fast retrieval of data. Excellent for boot up of a PC. Unless you have a need for critical speed for data, a normal HDD is sufficient and dirt cheap nowadays.

SSD will make your mac fly... the speed is amazing. Without moving parts, there is less friction and the SSD stays cooler. Whether it lasts long depends on how often read and write is performed on it. For me I use it to boot up and keep all the program files. It makes all operations faster. For data, I still use HDD.

It is known fact that SSD performance degrade over time.

There's also recent research that show's if SSD is exposed to heat constantly, data may be lost.

Another study also indicates if SSD is not powered up for an extended period, data may be lost as well.

So don't bet your most critical data in just one place only.

Always told my client nothing beats backup, and backup, and backup...

Then hit sales quota selling more storage devices...

Only at risk of losing data when the SSD is worn. Which is quite difficult to do so as a normal user. Even then, it can still go for 1 year before losing data. But it's still good to back up.

Windows 8.1 is actually pretty usable. It can boot straight to the desktop and you can almost get a Windows 7 experience. I never run any Metro apps and only encounter the Metro style for things like PC Settings.

For the Start screen, just unpin every app and put in your own favourite programs. Then it becomes a full-screen Start "button". [laugh]

What I like about Windows 8.1 is that it is more memory efficient than Windows 7, although some settings are dumbed down -- but they are still adjustable, one way or another.

Tks Vid. The reduced boot up time does not really matter to me as i never turn off the mac. I do lots of torrents so reading and writing i guess is almost 24/7.

As for the speed i don't do anything really heavy duty. Maybe the 5k display may take more out of the system but 2gig on the video card and 16gig ram should suffice.

I am more interested in the ssd being stable over periods of extended use.

Now this helps. Thanks Kingkong.

Performance lost over time and heat degradation will be a concern as my mac is on 23/7.

Yeah i do backup my critical data. But i was also under the the impression macs are much more stable than your average PC?

Sorry mate i just hate Windows 8.1. Microsoft wanted to implement a standard OS for all devices from PCs, to Mobile Phones to Laptops and conceptually it seemed ok.

But in actual practise i hardly use the touchscreen on my old PC. And this takes away from the touch experience that windows 8 was designed for. The absence of a start menu is dreadful. And part of the reason why i switched to a mac is because of windows 8. I end up with many functions i don't use and which suck up the resources of the PC.

Bottom line is, most of us just do not interface with the PC in the same way we interface with a mobile phone or a slate. I found it too tedious to swipe on a 23" screen. Doing it on a small 4-5" phone is ok, but repeating it on a huge screen that is NOT HORIZONTAL is tedious.

And btw if u r into 5k displays, windows 8 does not support 5k resolution. So if i ran windows on my mac, the screen resolution is reduced to 4k max.

IMHO Microsoft made some landmark failures in the past with Vista. Many corporate IT users refused to switch to Vista and hung on to XP. And they made another huge error with windows 8. This has pushed many frustrated users to convert to Mac.

The Mac is not a perfect rig and i am still grappling with some daily issues but i can definitely see why many users opt for it over Windows 8.

And tbh i don't think Windows 10 will be any better despite all the usual sales pitch. MS did the same marketing sales pitch for Vista and 8.1. And we know how that turned out.

Anyway i may be wrong. Only time will tell

Mac computer is something you buy and can forget about everything about "IT" as a computer. You can even forget to shut down for half a year and it will still chugg along with full vigor. My 10-year old Apple laptop doesn't need to shut down.

Those who notice a huge difference going from HDD to SSD, do you all have alot of programs running on startup? Recently changed to SSD but not much difference in bootup times for me. On HDD was around 15s and SSD also around there. Changed from a WD black to a samsung 850evo.
