Several passengers and crew members on board a Malaysia Airlines flight from London to Kuala Lumpur suffered minor injuries due to severe air turbulence.

The airline said in a statement on its Facebook page that Flight MH1, which had been carrying 378 passengers and crew, experienced "a brief moment of severe turbulence" over the Bay of Bengal.

"During the flight over the Bay of Bengal the passenger seatbelt light was switched on due to air turbulence," it said.

Photos circulating on Twitter showed toppled food carts, food strewn all over the aisle and cracks in overhead passenger units.

The aircraft landed safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on June 5, where it met with medical crew and Malaysia Airlines senior management.

A small number of the injured were also treated by medical officers.

"Malaysia Airlines has assisted the 378 passengers and crew onboard MH1 and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this weather event which was entirely beyond our control," added the statement.

You know, I know, every Malaysian know how their government and major government linked companies work.

In other countries, when there are bulk purchases, open bidding for the lowest price supplier is the norm.

In other countries, no matter if you are from which ethnicity or religion, if you are not contributing to the company, off you go.

This CEO already put in his resignation liao, must be pressure from the top cos all the cronies complain back to Ah Jib.

Not really..... should be more than 20%, maybe 40%.

If a market price for a pen is 1RM/pc, bulk purchase should be 0.8RM/pc.

So to be paying 1.2RM/pc, someone must be creaming off 0.4RM/pc minimum.

Actually they just need this 'bad' guy to do the dirty jobs as locals 'would not' want to do it.

Once things are ironed out or stabilised, out he will go....

Damn jialat, this company.

It's "damn jialat, this COUNTRY". Malaysia is the most screwed up and lazy country I have ever experienced. Certainly, there are smart and hardworking people but no one can beat the system. Just look at the 1MDB scandal and how the cronies cover each other backside. Thank God, we are in Singapore. Edited by Poper

6,000 MAS jobs were cut because employees "were sleeping"
AsiaOne Monday, Jun 20, 2016
Reuters

A war of words has erupted between the CEO of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and its flight attendants union, after the former revealed that 6,000 MAS employees were retrenched because many "had nothing to do".

In a no-holds-barred interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW), Mr Christoph Mueller, 54, revealed that MAS had a bloated workforce before he took over the job in March 2015.

He alleged that many MAS workers were sleeping in the hangars, and Malaysia's national carrier was overpaying suppliers more than 20-25 per cent of the market rate.

"Everything from pens to $200-million aircraft were purchased at these rates," Mr Mueller told DW during the June 10 interview, not before revealing that MAS had around 20,000 suppliers before he took over.

The number of suppliers has since been trimmed to 4,000, and will be reduced to 2,000, Mr Mueller added.

The straight-talking German did not mince his words when he described MAS' dire state before he took over: "Despite all the announcements by the government, a turnaround wasn't initiated by the time I became CEO."

The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) slammed his remarks immediately and said that Mr Mueller failed to understand the Malaysian work culture.

"He needs to understand the workers in operations work…24 hours and some do overtime, causing them to be exhausted," Nufam said in a statement on Facebook on June 17.

"Sleeping is not an excuse for a company like MAS to sack workers."

Nufam also posted a picture of Virgin Airlines owner Richard Branson next to a sleeping flight attendant, alluding that Mr Mueller was a harsh taskmaster, unlike Mr Branson.

Mr Mueller, who is a renowned turnaround aviation specialist, was hired by MAS in March 2015 after a series of calamities beleaguered the airline the previous year.

On April 19, MAS announced that Mr Mueller will be leaving the airline in Sept 2016 after one year at the helm, citing "changing personal circumstances".

A circular e-mailed to staff later revealed that he had to leave due to "personal reasons which are beyond (his) control"

His original contract was for a tenure of three years.
