In layman's terms -- it will change the effective AFR within the cylinders, perhaps drastically. ↡ Advertisement
richard_crl032 6th Gear March 13, 2023 Share March 13, 2023 (edited) Read that even for diesel engines without retuning is not ideal with error msg for a reason and torque solution kit for wrx specifically mentioned about retuning .. paiseh but only keyboard warrior and not real experience 🙏🙏 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1647899-running-egr-delete-with-no-tuner.html Edited March 13, 2023 by richard_crl032
5ub23r0 1st Gear March 14, 2023 Share March 14, 2023 (edited) EGR delete with retune is to optimise engine performance and longevity especially cars produced in the past 5-8 years due to the proliferation of ECU controls and mapping. All vehicles nowadays will have EGR, especially diesel cars, with EGR + DPF (diesel particulate filter). the EGR, works hand in hand with the catalyctic converter and DPF (for diesel cars/trucks) to remove most particulate and toxic gases from exhaust. if you remove EGR without tuning, your car will still work fine for awhile but the cat will be running hotter due to more particulate going throught the cat, and the cat might fail earlier (although i have not seen this happneing yet). frankly speaking if you plan to keep your car inspection friendly and don't want the hassle of retuning the engine, then you might want to skip EGR delete, and just go for your annual or 50K mileage walnut blasting. For diesel cars, the tune is absolutely needed as EGR is an integral part of emissions control, even more so than petrol vehicles (EGR could potentially recirculate up to 60% of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold for diesel vehicles; vs 20% of petrol vehicles). What @inlinesix mentioned here is a vehicle that's more than 10 years old.... vehicles back then could possibly remove EGR without a tune as the EGR system is not as aggresive programmed/setup as today's standards (Euro 4 vs Euro 5 vs Euro 6). I had a tuned d-max (not in sgp) with EGR system removed, DPF removed, highflow pipes and AOS for PCV management, uprated air intake but stock turbo. 20% more HP and close to 50% extra torque at certain rpm ranges. intake temps and engine bay temps reduced and there was FC improvement too.... but by removing all those everytime WOT is like setting a smoke screen (coal rolling). It ain't good for the people around you and the environment but it will satisfy your butt feeling. Watwheels Supersonic March 14, 2023 Share March 14, 2023 (edited) EGR delete can pass inspection? I highly doubt it. The EGR on petrol engines are still not as bad as diesel ones. I think it activates when idling and under heavy accelerations where there are more unburnt fuel present in the exhaust gases. Adding a delete kit will causes the engine temperature to increase. That is what I read. Introducing exhaust gas into the air fuel mixture will maintain the engine temperature at optimal. It dilutes the oxygen levels to reduce the heat from the combustion. You might think it will reduce the engine power output. I think this is when the engine temp gets too high. I dont do EGR delete kit if this is the case. Last thing that you want is the excess heat reducing the lifespan on the seals and parts in/on the engine. Anyway my car also has the EGR system. It has all the coolant running thru the pipe works to cool the exhaust gas before it enters the air intake manifold. I DIY remove the a piece of the pipe that connects the control valve output to the inlet to the air manifold and clean the control valve and air intake manifold with throttle cleaner. I do see some soot on the air intake inlet but it is not much. For the control valve outlet the soot is insignificant and there were no corrosions around the outlet. I read that cars similar to my car in the US theirs will corrode due to the lower RON in their petrol. 95RON is recommended, hence the reply they got from the car maker is to use more premium fuel. I clean that part every 5000km. The pipe is just held by 4 hex 6mm bolts, 2 on each side. It takes a few more cranks to start the engine because the throttle body cleaning solvent needs to exit the combustion chamber. After the engine starts it is good to go. In this case, I am glad to found out about walnut blasting cos the photos shows how carbon builds up despite coolant cooled IAG AOS and it cannot be good for performance and driveability .. call it preventive if you may. Engine does seems smoothly and quieter after walnut blasting with zero issue makes it attractive for me to do so again every 40k km max. Using Octane 95 is indeed sensible per recommended by Subaru but I had always do with Octane 98 and a bit reluctant to change .. it does not help that mine is a bit heavy with all the soundproofing done together with ICE installation and Octane 95 loses a bit of grunt 😒 Read more of this EGR delete which I understand needs retuning and I will pass then .. no plan to do retuning unless backside itches again and failing inspection or legality is not an option 😌 Point in my original post is the AOS and certainly catch cans do not seems to eradicate this carbon builtup seen except mentioned delete EGR that I have no experience on .. I do recommend walnut blasting for your case since not done so by a capable workshop since already 175k km and do have photos of the valves taken before and after to feel good after $ spent 😂 Cheers. PS: I am always with 5W40 motul 300v in hope for quieter engine with thicker eo and believe it also help in our hot climate and turbo charged engine Related Technical Service Bulletin ..
