Yes, it is called Hill Start Assist,

Understand in hill start assist the car applies brake like for 2 sec after brake is released to allow driver time to engage accelerator. I thought in drive mode there is a idling torque...wont that be enough to cover the time right foot switches from brake to accelerate?

Hope this is useful for fellow Forrester owners. Please feel free to add your comments.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT

• Anything that has yellow colour is the only parts that we can touch.

• Never allow 3rd party installer to connect to the battery directly

• It's not recommended to install alarm system; even MI does not provide such option

• Battery we have in our car is original from Japan - liquid type not maintenance free

• Wiper fluid - just water, add a bit of shampoo if the wiper is squeaking. The same container is used for both front and rear wiper

• Radiator coolant - just top up with water if the level is low, only required when driving very long distance.

• Brake fluid - no need to top up, the technician uses it to assess the thickness of the brake pad

• If the car is left for more than 1 week (e.g. travel), disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. The EU will not reset, but the clock and audio (radio stations, etc) needs to be re-adjusted

• There is a row of fuse near the batter (covered) - according to him no need to change anything and if there's any fuse blown just bring it back to MI for checking

• The engine has a automatic sensor that will not allow high speed if the engine is overheated

• It's difficult and time consuming to replace the spark plugs. We have four in the car and it'll take easily 1.5 hours. Fortunately this only needs to be done at 80k or 100k.

INTERIOR

• When starting the engine, go through the cycle of push the start button once to activate audio and clock, another time for the full check and then press the brake together with the button to start the engine. He recommended that sequence to ensure all's tested before the engine is started.
• The coolant blue light is normal, no need to warm up but be aware that the temperature of the engines, oil, transmission etc. is not optimal so the engine will sound a bit rough
• Air con - auto climate function will open up the external air inlet if the temperature is too low or if the air has been circulating for too long. Cannot be overridden, set up in Japan
• Type pressure - he recommended 225 front/235 rear or 230/230 for better fuel consumption and longer tyre life
• There's no way to change the l/100km display. He asked us to ignore it since it's not accurate and just use the standard way of topping up and taking notes of how many km's were driven after that.
• "Hill assist" is activated when the brake is pressed more than 1 second on a slope. The car will be stationery for 4 seconds without pressing the brake. But this function will not work if the handbrake is activated.
• The paddle shifter can be used in D or M mode, although he doesn't see any need for that in Singapore traffic
• The X-mode is useful for downhill or uphill climb; it will limit the speed to about 40 km/h
• The VDC button (on the bottom right of steering wheel) shouldn't be touched. It's vehicle dynamic control managed by the ECU to compensate any drastic movement and typically deactivated when during dragging :-)
• The auto-fold mirror accessory can be purchased and installed - S$ 160 with tax included. Well worth it in my view.

REAR

• The spare tyre has a holder for the car jack; tighten the screw of that to stop the thumping noise from the rear when passing a hump. He said this is a common complaint that can be easily fixed
• The cover (which we can pull to cover the luggage area) can be taken out and there's a placeholder on the spare tyre

Not on Forester. In fact they said any car with keyless starter is not recommended to have alarm.

I also think it is not necessary.

Most of the alarm installed are after market from AD or owner itself, not from factory.

Without the key fob, basically you cant't start the car.

 use brake fluid to assess brake pad thickness??? wah piang... use eye and check visually lah! or better still, measure the brake pad thickness on collection day to monitor actual usage...

coolant blue light on my current Leggy means you should not drive hard until the temperature has warm up enough to clear this warning...

paddle shifter no need in Singapore traffic? try filtering lanes/joining expressway in a hurry in I-mode and see if you really don't need those...

Car alarm is necessary if you drive a Harrier and mark X.. Esp when u go massage in JB

Yes, it all depends on the inclination of the slope. For gentle slope, I don't need to step on brake and the car holds its position. For steeper slopes, eg HDB carparks ramps, the hill assist will hold for about 2s before car rolls back.

My new KIA sorento has a auto hold function which is very useful on elevated slopes.  Once activated, it will automatically hold the car stationary once you apply the brakes a little harder after car stops.  It release itself once you step on the accelerator.  It function like the handbrake. Very useful especially on steep slope like car park  exit in Ngee Ann city where Jam always occur.  Even on flat road, it helps to hold car in position, thus no need to step on brake pedal with gear in drive mode. This is very useful when you are caught in a traffic Jam.

 

All cars should have this feature!

It is useful if:

1. 2 way alarm; or

2. Siren sound is some horny making out sound.
