Volvobrick Supersonic May 20, 2015 Share May 20, 2015 Thailand might not benefit much other than as a landlord collecting passage charges. Look at Panama and Egypt. I don't think they have big buzzling ports near to the world's 2 busiest canals. Singapore should be able to retain at lease transhipment traffic serving Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia. Yoongf 4th Gear May 21, 2015 Share May 21, 2015 Panama canal is 77km long and Kra Canal is going to be about 102km long ; Also the ships cannot speed like the way they do at Straits of Malacca and again ships have to stop at certain intervals (like a bus bay) so that ships can go both ways right in a one lane passage- I think and usd28 billion project is no joke and might take more than 10 years even with todays technology and expertise It will be very easy for them to say.. only china shipping lines can use this private canal. Travelling slower at a fixed escalator pace will still be better than rounding thru Sg.

Volvobrick Supersonic May 21, 2015 Share May 21, 2015 The one in Nicaragua started construction - in fact they need to first build roads and ports to ship materials before they can truly construct the canal. This one is in US own backyard. The one in Thailand hasn't started, no ? But some believe it could be built in a similar model as Nicaragua, as a private investment project. In fact, China shipping companies have been very proactive and ambitious in exploring new routes. 1-2 years ago, Cosco, the biggest shipping line in the world was already exploring the Northern Arctic route to ship to Europe. They are big enough to create new waves. Singapore on the other hand, must adapt to these new waves. The Kra canal doesn't seem to be big enough for oil tankers ? But China already were building oil pipes through Myanmar and Pakistan, so that may also divert some shipping traffic away from Singapore. US waiting for the Nicaragua canal to be completed then force a regime change..... Easiest thing to do since it's in its own backyard! Get a new canal fully funded by China in exchange for a few boots on the ground.

US forced a regime change under the excuse of getting rid of Saddam for having WMD and supporting Al Qaeda. Today, US look so stupid. Do you think they now dare to confront China directly over the canal projects ?

But China already were building oil pipes through Myanmar and Pakistan, so that may also divert some shipping traffic away from Singapore. Kra canal is designed for super-sized bulk-carrier ships with 24m draft. That includes most of Chinamax-size bulk carrier and oil tankers. This type of ship is different from containers carriers with smaller draft. If customers with such ships cannot use the canal, then Nicaragua and Kra canal won't interest the Chinese investors in the first place. Chinamax ships are the longest bulk carriers and mostly used to carrier iron ore from Australia or Brazil to China.
