We cannot stop others of their planning. Beside just short cut, other infrastructures are equally important. Sea trade will still be important but surely we would have to find other source of biz too. That is why we are paying millions to scholars right? The separatism in southern Thailand will likely explode if the canal goes ahead. Natural new border. That's the primary strategic reason holding it back all these years imo. ↡ Advertisement

macrosszero Turbocharged November 8, 2023 Share November 8, 2023 Its not the first time there's a challenger; Tanjong Pelepas is right next to Singapore, so it basically has all the same geographical advantages of Singapore's ports. Yet it speaks volumes that many Malaysian companies still route their freight through PSA's ports, precisely because of efficiency and security. On paper the Kra Canal could cut Singapore off, but it remains to be built, then safely and efficiently-run, and at a cost that justifies the time saved.

But in view of the potential challengers lining up, SG needs to buck up and find new sources of business and revenues.

You didn't notice the casinos, events, destination venues, increase in population both expat and new residents? We are a regional hub, in more than just the airport and shipping port sense.
Voodooman Supersonic November 8, 2023 Share November 8, 2023 Don't see them ever building the Kra Canal but the land bridge is more likely now. But I haven't read of any wildly successful land bridge as there are 7-8 loading and unloading involving ship to truck to rail to truck to ship. China will bankroll it. They need alternative route bypassing Strait of Malacca.

Technically PTP is a transhipment hub for Maersk after they couldn't lease berths from PSA. PSA and Pasir Gudang and the import/export facilities for the neighbourhood and MY shippers will chose to send to PSA over Pasir Gudang purely for connections. I do have stuff arrive at PG directly from EU but choices are more in SG.

May not be a pipe dream as concern over the "10th" Malay Sultanate can be addressed.

I have no doubt that China's OBOR is to spread influence and Sri Lanka's location is pretty strategic. And if Sri Lanka as a sovereign nation cannot object to the use of Hambanthota as a Chinese military base, China can move the port to a more friendly country like Myanmar.
