Beehive3783 Turbocharged May 14, 2015 Share May 14, 2015 Ah, I remember.. The anal/rectum doctor right? a good doctor once said to the media when running for election “Well, everybody has a car, we have two — my wife drives one, I drive one. We are both professionals, we need to travel.” TS, are you a professional? I think you can save more if you switch to diesel car. No need, it's a must.I drive 36000km per year so a car is a must for me.I wouldn't be able to travel the same distance with a lower cost over owning a car & public transport.I had worked out taxi is costlier while bus/mrt takes too long of my journey. And also, car is mean for work so I'm able to rush for urgent deliveries for my client if my contractor failed me.Also manage to save cost over certain jobs where my contractors have no choice to overcharge me where a car is simple pick & go. DriveSlow Clutched May 14, 2015 Share May 14, 2015 Is a car necessary anywhere in the world, for that matter ? Sure the answer is - a matter of convenience and a matter of I would love to own a car and drive, It is necessary to breath, drink and eat but owning a car is not in the same category. Having said that, what a stupid question.
flashbang Turbocharged May 14, 2015 Share May 14, 2015 Convertible is not very practical in Singapore not because of the heat but because of the traffic. All the exhaust from the cars around you will spoil your drive.

kmttan 4th Gear November 9, 2015 Share November 9, 2015 A car is definitely needed for the face so that people will see me up. If cannot afford, just eat bread and water lor. Die die must have. Face more important.
Cheeky 1st Gear November 9, 2015 Share November 9, 2015 This is a meaningless discussion. Those who think they need a car will find all sort of justification for a car, even if they cannot afford one.
Bambi Clutched November 10, 2015 Share November 10, 2015 Its up to you. If you are the citizen of Singapore the you can. If you are a visitor then you can hire from any rental company.

rabbitsfoot Neutral Newbie November 11, 2015 Share November 11, 2015 Perhaps it's all about weighing the pros and cons - are you willing to pay such a hideous amount for a car when there is public transport? Maybe it's also about self-fulfillment where you feel good that you can afford and drive your own car around. I mean, it's definitely a good skill to have and convenience is brought up a huge notch (plus a great factor when chasing the ladies). But... is it practical in sg? HMMMM.
alym Neutral Newbie December 23, 2015 Share December 23, 2015 Evaluation Criterias financial - our car ownership cost structure is rocket science, complex and costly whether it's one time, recurring cost, or surprises i.e. fines. if you can afford $$$, then own a car. convenience - if you don't have time, you pay $$$ for the car hopefully for you to gain time. lifestyle - depending on your lifestyle, your size of family, activities, etc, car is definitely useful where you need it. however you need to evaluate the frequency of such type of usage public transport - resilience, reliability and availability will be key for public transport become alternate consideration to do away without a car. ego - passion of car, or the lack of car which will deflate your ego, can determine your urgency to buy one
Limwsv 5th Gear December 23, 2015 Share December 23, 2015 Almost there. With the new lines added within the next 10 years, I will safely say that private cars are almost unnecessary. If you add in to the transportation mix driverless cars shared in common, then I will say all the advantages of privates cars will be negated. Other than if you are a petrol head.

Vinceng Turbocharged December 23, 2015 Share December 23, 2015 Cars aren't necessary in Singapore. It is much cheaper to take taxi than own a car. Then why you own a car? Come to morning and evening peak periods and during rainy days, even if you have $$$ and call for a cab, can't get through the line and even if you get thru the line, no cabs avail, even with Uber and GrabTaxi APPs.
nazerath Turbocharged December 23, 2015 Share December 23, 2015 cars are not a necessity if you dun need to get to somewhere and have all the time to travel, heck we dun need planes too. we could sail. So technically dun need but good to have.
Cheefarn 5th Gear December 24, 2015 Share December 24, 2015 Cars aren't necessary in Singapore. It is much cheaper to take taxi than own a car. I challenge you to substaiate that claim! How much is your daily taxi fare? In order to do a fair comparision, you MUST leave MRT and buses out of the equation. You need to book for a cab/uber/grabcar etc everywhere you go since if u have a car, you just go to your car, hop in an drive off. You don't wait by a busy roadside in heavy rain for over 1 hour for your own car right? And you need to cab during weekends too... Things eg bringing your kids to classes, marketing, going to your in laws, parents house, meet your frens, meet your mistress.... You work out the sum of money you incurred per week, then come back to tell us its cheaper to take taxi than owning a car...
