I challenge you to substaiate that claim!

 

How much is your daily taxi fare? In order to do a fair comparision, you MUST leave MRT and buses out of the equation.

 

You need to book for a cab/uber/grabcar etc everywhere you go since if u have a car, you just go to your car, hop in an drive off. You don't wait by a busy roadside in heavy rain for over 1 hour for your own car right?

 

And you need to cab during weekends too... Things eg bringing your kids to classes, marketing, going to your in laws, parents house, meet your frens, meet your mistress.... [laugh]

 

You work out the sum of money you incurred per week, then come back to tell us its cheaper to take taxi than owning a car...

If I calculate the way you say, I need about $200-300 a week to travel everywhere by cab or uber. I think that is cheaper than owning a car. Car still got to factor in insurance, petrol, parking, maintenance and time wasted looking for parking lots when going to a crowded place. With uber, nowadays not hard to get a ride even in the rain already.

Well for one thing... their cities were built AROUND the subway stations... for us... we jammed up the land first and then try to look for available space to build our subways. And our network is till no where as extensive as them... strange that you didnt mention any major cities in Japan there LOL. Also, their subway network was built up over a period of over 100 years.... London oldest part of the subway first appeared in 1840, and Boston T green line first started operation in 1897.

 

And their citizens don't need to endure train break down twice a week and still got blamed for having too high an expectations of our subway systems!

 

Come on bro, proper planning or not, there are times where the time taken by public transport is just plain ridiculous. Eg From Yishun to Outram... By car I can do it in approx 20-25mins point to point. By BMW, its easily 1 hr if not more. And you need to walk in the rain for part of the journey... :(

 

And pray tell what kind of planning can we do if you have 1.5hrs max every morning to shuttle your kids to sch and then u yourself to work at the far side of the island? And then less available time in the evening to fetch them home for you are trying to beat the sch official closing time at 630pm? Can u tell your boss to let u go at 430pm ?

Since you stays in Yishun, why kid study in Outram?  Why not move to Outram instead?

 

I take train everyday nowadays.  I don't experience that many breakdown le.  Why?

 

When i bought my place 10 yrs, i don't have to walk more than 10 mins to MRT station.  I can go anywhere downtown within 15mins.  That's call Planning.

 

Lastly, with DTL2 starting this Sunday, more than half of the island is covered with MRT.

Actually SG quite convenient.. and where one stays matters. I choose to stay at a place that's just 6-7km from work place, 5min walk to MRT interchange, main bus service available. Can live without car really. But I choose to drive a car..

Let's budget $50 per day for taxi. You burst the budget some days and you fall well in within on other days so let's use that as an average. That works out to $1500 per month and $18,000 pa. That is definitely cheaper than driving an F430  :a-fun:

Many car owners here will say car is not necessary but they choose to have one.

 

Actually this is not a bad idea. They contribute to nation building so govt can collect more taxes and use it to build infrastructure for the people. More roads, better train network, more overhead bridges...and so on.

My answer to this question is "No"! Anywhere you come from, the answer is obviously "No", not necessarily in Singapore only. Whether you are working or schooling or even a retiree, there is public transport in Singapore to move you around and at pretty low prices (as compared to car ownership). As such, it is not a "Must Have" in Singapore. 

 

However, each of us leads a different lifestyle and some for the convenience, may so decide to own a car for various reasons. There is no right and wrong answer, only based on needs. Even if it is based on needs, it can be classified into 2 main categories, namely "You really need one" or "You just prefer to have one".

 

To each his own, as long as you can afford it and wants to own it, go ahead.
