that day was helping a fren to test drive a auto car, took me some time to adjust to auto. my left leg kept stepping on the 'clutch' which is the brake & my hand on the gear knob [laugh]. the dealer looked stress as he thought i was a newbie driver

I actually went to test drive a very very popular made in Japan car.. Up front, I told the agent I have more than 12 years of actual on the road daily driving experience but I am always on manual.

Haha, the agent looked a bit scared and gave me mini coaching lesson on the spot. Mmz, throughout the drive I felt awkward sia. Not used to driving auto. Heehee

Accent was always available. But then like the elantra, they brought in under a different name. Previous gen accent is the Verna.

How about Hyundai Excel, which year did it exit the market here.

I don't remember which version, but there was one excel where the steering wheel was very heavy, haha

i feel that a manual transmission car is lower in maintenance and is more fuel economic beside better handling and have full control of a fast moving car during a bend. i like to cub corner, so manual car is a must for me.

i think we can change auto to manual right? i have seen many civic owners doing that. so i think we could change the GB here with our performance spec even if AD is not bringing in the manual. no problem. manual rocks!

Transmission switch is a lot of work. Don't think it's economical to do.

Lower maintenance... yeah, I suppose so. But of course manuals are not problem free too.

More fuel economy... current autos and DCTs are really close now. I don't think it's worth buying a manual just for economy.

As for control, that's why it's called manual... as a manual-licensee I very much miss having the fine control of the clutch... but I am probably going to be most happy with an auto with manual gate or paddles. In typical driving I admit that actually auto really takes off a lot of load for me.

my dad is a hardcore manual driver... but he is adaptable, he can drive auto without trouble but he will rest his hand on the stick, though he don't have the "forget that there's no 3rd pedal" problem.

Excel no more already. Replaced by the Accent. Dunno why Sg go back to using the Accent name. In Korea, they call it Verna and it is sold as Verna in many countries. Only in US sold as Accent. Seems like Komoco decided to follow US and use Elantra instead of Avante and Accent instead of Verna.

Changing the gear box from auto to manual requires a lot of work / labour. Hearsay lifespan or maintenance wise from some other forums. Anyone can xonfirm?

The base model Elantra comes with cloth upholstery and rear manual windows, which is a rare sight nowdays.

Should bring back the Proton Saga manual.

Rear leg space is comparable to Almera.

Proton? Please it is piece of junk. I rate it 1/4 step above the China cars

yeah, that Proton Saga is a gas guzzler even in manual form.

Isn't it cheaper to maintain a manual gearbox? Auto transmission replacement cost 10k +++

Heard that rumour but not sure whether it's true or not.

Manual cost much less!?

Really? I have auto wanted to try out the Perdana when I visit my friend in Malaysia..

depends on the length of horizon...

Short term: manual more expensive to maintain as you would need to change GB oil and clutch. Materials are cheap, but labour not. For auto, you can "believe" all the makers' claim on "long life" or "lifelong" transmission oil, no need to change oil ever craps...to save costs, short term.

However, when GB piang, it's the most expensive thing to replace or overhaul.

Auto GB suits most Singaporeans well 'cos most own cars for relatively short period before changing to another new one. They leave behind a time bomb "lemon" to the next owner.

But with the current COE, hardly anyone changes car every 3-5 years. Most people drive until cannot drive ie. 10 years.

So... they will be stuck with a lemon themselves.

Donkey years ago i done the conversion from AT to MT

Quite a simple job if you can manage to find a MT half cut from the same made

I had even been thru annual inspection twice

No question asked from the inspectors

But u had to factor in it's not easy to sell off the car later on

No dealer will want take your car and no buyer had confidence to buy your car

Yes definitely there's changes to the lifespan and maintenance

MT lifespan is longer because clutch can be change when worn out

AT maintenance is easier because u only require to change oil when it's due

But when AT break down the cost of repairing / rebuilding is [sweatdrop]

Whole gearbox overhaul for anything, whether AT or MT is expensive (DCT sure worse)... but auto should have more electrical components, so probably more expensive, but due to clutch and constantly moving parts ... and how fierce the driver's shifting style, clutch, etc. can also burn out prematurely in manual. I'm sure those guys who do high rev clutch-drop for launch and then do short-throw fast shift sure can break their MT faster than normal.

In SG... manual car can be more expensive than auto... such is the low demand, only country in the world like this [hur]

But really in SG where you can't go more than 100m without meeting a traffic light and speed limits that are typically <60km/h... and highways that can be congested and necessitate lots of upshifts and downshifts... Automatic really is the comfortable life for most drivers. The 3A license doesn't encourage people to learn manual either.

Think if u have an existing 2 pedal car & want to change, do it only when u decide that u want to renew coe and drive yourself or when the the existing tranny need rebuild (& u need to spend 2.5-4k anyway..)

Hearsay the change from 2p to 3p for a bnb car cost easily 4k all in.

That I agree. Who knows, in the future no option for Class 3 license.. only 3A.

Who knows, in the future there will be no more instructors who can teach learners to drive manual.

If I not wrong the driving centres still bulk order manual Honda/Toyota cars from agent for learner cars.

Those new Jazz/City/Vios got manual I think specially for them.
