Don't make a big deal of your illness means you die, your business, SAF tai chee.

Declare your illness and some Internet heroes immediately label you chao keng.

Liddat how to win?

haiz.....cynicism is especially prevalent in an army made up mostly of conscripts.

sometime its not that straight forward.....some commanders, peers likes to use the term 'Mind over Matter'. Seen and heard many times even among casual sportsmen. I know of men who still want to go for training even though they are having/recovering from a fever and fasting at the same time. Well...no matter what i think nobody has won a suit involving SAF before!

I wouldn't want to sign up as a professional soldier knowing the constraints a commander faces in today's training scenarios.

"Pte Lee, who was diagnosed with asthma prior to enlisting in November 2011, had to wear a blue band around his wrist to indicate his condition."

"State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid also pointed out that Pte Lee had 'underplayed and underdeclared' his asthma history during a pre-enlistment medical check-up, in which he failed to mention his latest attack."

...hhmmmm.....so liddat, what is what har??

That's what I tell all the NSFs .Do the best you can, but if really cannot say you cannot, or don't do it. If you get injured it's your life and your problem. No point acting Garang and face the risk, SAF is not going to take care of you when you are old and the past injuries come back to haunt you. Edited by Mkl22

ya...me too. Most regulars like my son eventhough with rank are still on course despite being attached to an all regular unit. I asked him when will he be attach to a conscript unit....he was unsure. Last time when i was in an nsf unit....there were 2 ncos per section...one is an ns and the other is a regular, sargeant and above are all regulars! Now got 1st, 2nd, 3rd Sargeant.....not sure who are the regulars! There is a unit near AMK that have an all regular outfit. Men below the rank of Sargeant sign a contract of about 2-3 yrs....Sargeant and above sign for 4-5 yrs. This unit can be deployed anytime around tge world when requested.......

Nowadays the army rigourous training are not as tough as before. No more 8km force marches for all units except for commandos, SOC is no more...i think its call boc where the men needs only to clear a new obstacle course that ends with a 100m dash. No more pushups unless given by pti or officers. Seems like heaven siak!

dont think so lar....both the death in my unit werent classiffied as thus....one was due to viral infection that affected his heart and the other had heatstroke. One was reported in the ST and reported as thus but the other i was not sure as it happened during bmt. But both instances both parents wanted to sue SAF and both did not succeed in their suit.....not sure whether both incidents went to court or not.

In the good old days it's also different. Those who are high risk are all peasants sons and if anything happen, they also won't say too much or know what to do. Those who's parents know what to do or are influential get 'chopped' with WH and already well taken care off.

Now it's different. Everyone is better educated and know their rights. Not so easy to hush hush. But I'm sure the practice of WH still continues abit in another form.

can't remember where i read or heard that it was mentioned that 5 or 6 smoke grenades was thrown in.

1 smoke grenade is already fuxking lot of smoke..i can't imagine 6 smoke grenades burning...

probably the b@stard who throw the smoke grenade is trigger happy and think it's fun to smoke the shit out of those trainees,in the end caused the unfortunate death of this private.

just like the dunking case, dunk the poor fella until no tomorrow.they probably thought it was fun.

wait till their own sons get dunk and die,see what's their response.

Every kinda training has a safety directive or TSR (I dunno what it's called now). Every commander has to go thru it or go thru it in lesson with the soldiers. So it's no excuse if excessive smoke grenades were used. The commander in charge and safety offier should be responsible. TSR are written by soldiers and civilians, so if the commanders and soldiers dun follow....good luck. I believe the parents have a strong case on this. The officers will most likely be charged on court and court martial. Career and life liao liao.

This makes me angry that our soldiers are not adequately covered by insurance (or the SAF) for training deaths!

Why are they making our conscripts who are getting a pittance of an allowance buy their own insurance? I remember when I was in NS, this insurance agent came down during the first week trying to get us to buy insurance by telling us how dangerous everything was and how we needed to get insurance for our families.

Utter bulls**t. SAF should cover training deaths for 1 mil dollars and non-SAF related for 250k as long as the bugger is holding an 11B instead of his pink IC.

It's a good idea for SAF to insure all combat soldiers. But... there's always a but... they will get it back from their miserable allowance.

So in the end, it's still the same as soldiers paying for insurance themselves.

This I agree. In the working environment in Singapore employers are required to buy workmen comp and hospitalisation insurance for their workers but why in NS we have to buy our own insurance coverage? This truely is bull crap.

Agreed while heartedly.

Think this way. How many nsf die a year from training? ?

Tell insurance company:

if average 3 die per year.

Pay you say 3 million a year.

Every time a nsf die, pay 1 million compensation.

If no one die, you keep.

What's 3 million a year for mindef ??!!!

Otherwise.

For the price of 1 minister, parents get some compensation. Just remove some minister without portfolio or minister in PMO can liao.

many would say they die for their country.....

but that only happens if in a war. We are talking about negligent act and to brush it off with a few grands, this is unacceptable.

I think nowadays nsfs get 100k automatic insurance unless they opt out...
