Dear MCFers,

My situation is that I need to go to KL to fetch some items from a supplier.

The supplier does not provide delivery to Singapore.

I ownself contact a KL to SG shipping company, they quote me a crazy price.

Also worst part is that to make a commercial shipment across the Johor customs, the Malaysia supplier must register with customs. And a lot of documents and disclosures are required from the Malaysian supplier, which they are unwilling to do, because they don't make and sales to Singapore.

So the best option is to drive a S-plate car to personally fetch the items.

However problem is I only have a G-plate van.

So I was thinking is I drive into and out of Johor customs at let's say 2 am in the morning, should be able to get across?

Last time I enter Johor customs with a rental S-plate at 2 am (to avoid jam), seems like no one doing any checks on the Malaysia side?

My suggestion.

Rent a car in SG.

Rental cars can drive in to Malaysia and insured as well.

Per day only $70-150 if i am not wrong.

Why take risk when u drive in with your van, and if they stop u, u pay coffee money... or they kick u back SG...

Spending a day rental car is worth the hassle since u wanna save on the shipping cost.

No point risking your G plate van. It's a good 4 to 5 hour journey one way. Even if you clear custom, you've to stress over getting stopped at roadblock, and coming back whether MY customs will let you leave the country or not, whether SG will disturb you ask you declare this and that. S plate car in SG, you can try to pass your items off as gifts for personal use, depending on what they are.

You rent those big Toyota Estima to fit all your stuff in also worth the money, although if you've a lot of things, I feel it's better to make separate trips, nowadays SG customs a bit on the ball from my experience these few weeks, probably due to the new laws on GST relief and petrol.

If your van is 100% LTA legal, you go above 70km/h the speed warning beep beep, you can tolerate? If manual van stuck at causeway jam and KL traffic, make the trip so unenjoyable. I know you're doing it for work and you seem to run your own business, no point you run your own business to torture yourself when there are other better alternatives.

I don't know how the diesel works in MY, if yours is those new euro vans, it might be fussy over the quality of the fuel. Although with diesel mileage, if you full tank go in, I think that tank might be able to take you to KL and back. Beauty of diesel.

If you really need a van, I suggest you get a Malaysian contact to drive you and your stuff from KL to SG and pay him for petrol, wear and tear and pocket money. Reward yourself by booking Singapore Airlines from SG to KL, stay in a nice hotel, eat good food. No stress about driving and losing your vehicle.

It’s possible to enter using g plate if you use for leisure purposes. Whenever you enter empty out your vehicle fully. Better if you have those sofa type installed. So msia side JPJ won’t really recognise easily, let’s say your van is fully glass panel

means is ok. JPJ won’t recognise all vans except those Hiace cos very likely to get caught. Sg side use lorry lane or bus lane(possible if you got passenger but if you alone use lorry lane) then msia use car lane. But if you bring back those trade items you might have a problem at msia customs. Might ah not all the time. Sg side they don’t care, you just show ur invoice pay tax okay alr. It’s msia side with the issues. If you are worried about the lorry lane queue, you can use tuas link

Turbocharged

Some vans may look like cars, no doubt.

But the Malaysian custom officers can recognize the letter G on the licence plate right?

Nope, i drive through few times already (last week). Being a G plate is no issue. Pick up trucks, land rovers drive in with no issues. I have a friend who drives his pick up frequently to jb... Edited by thiq_
