Still better double check with your insurer first as almost all standard policy does not cover using car for "reward" in any kinds.

While the new law clarifies, there's a "manhole" trap which your motor insurance is not plugged.

.....................bring legal clarity to what was a grey area.

..............................laws allows drivers to accept monetary compensation or payment in kind for offering rides - though it should not be for profit.

Payment in kind......not be for profit

All I can say is Kong Hee Fa Cai.

I think is a good thing, but also wondering what does "for profit" mean - and how they would measure.

Does "for profit" mean only cover petrol? Or Petrol + ERP?

Or petrol + ERP +1 day season parking? Or Petrol + ERP + Season Parking + 1 day insurance + 1 day road tax?

As to "finding rides"

Would love to see something set-up at bus interchange - with a few preset locations eg - shenton way, biopolis, CBP...could possible even has some system of LCD board with destination on it for pick-up.

otherwise ask around orifice - but only if got regular morning timing - I think many would be agreeable on a per trip basis direct to office, from nearby your home.

Another possibility would be for building management to arrange some sort of app or similar...

they like to implement rules in shades of grey.

how to calculate petrol?

cost shld rightfully include depreciation, wear and tear of car plus time cost of the driver.

if cover petrol only, it is probably not going to persuade people to offer their car for this carpooling.

and also like one brother said, what about the insurance clauses?

Yep ...

Talked about this in the Uber thread -

Which, by the way I am rather annoyed - some reporter from ST wrote a "glowing" recommendation for Uber in today's paper - it read almost like an advertorial, but she totally didn't address in any way, shape or form the regulatory issues, or the potential problems...doesn't seem to me to be very good reporting

IMO I think it's useful when it's raining and you are trying desperately to hail for a cab or call one with no hope in sight or if you are in a hurry and stuck in a location like Tuas South where no taxis will head there. Such carpooling will benefit such people and also perhaps eliminate long queues at taxi stands with no cab in sight.

I think it's not at all negative stuff, at least it sort of gives people more reason to stop and help since it benefits both driver and passenger.

Not just clearance with insurer........I used to give short rides to neighbors, mother with young children, etc....to MRT, bus stops or markets. Until one day, it dawn onto me that despite the kind deed, nobody is going to be appreciative when something untoward happens along the way; accident, whiplash, etc.....

Later Kenna sued or claimed kao kao. What more about receiving payment for giving rides for car pooling.

Now bopian, only give rides to friends & relatives.

This is just waiting for people to abuse.

Waiting for taxi uncle strike

Agreed...

Now, anyone can just ask for payment from passengers for a ride...

On a sidenote, if we don't like to ferry our colleagues, we can always have the right to ask a huge fare payment so as to deter him from sitting in our cars :D

i think, the situation as of now does nothing to stop you from carpooling. but the introduction of the law does create a signalling effect that the practice is endorsed, if not encouraged. people will be more open to it, so i think legislation indeed helps somewhat.
