Advice needed - BMW 316i vs 320ED

Sheer driving pleasure on a BMW is a number of things but you have to drive on a long term to feel it I guess? The whole feel makes you feel "connected" to the car, everything seem driver oriented and some will say gives you the cockpit sensation. Not to mention the 50/50 weight distribution and ZF gearbox etc

That said I find the older E46 to be a better driving pleasure to my current F30, actually I bought the F30 because of that. So ironically to get a feel of the ultimate driving machine its best to try the previous Bmw models. (that's my opinion)

As for your example on the ferrari its different car different application I guess, as part of some experience package we took a ferrari and a gtr out for a run at about 240ish and I would say the ferrari felt inherently more stable at that kind of speed but to use the ferrari as an everyday car considering the humps and road works and traffic its another story altogether.

well, actually i share your view to a certain degree...but i can understand why some people just want to have a car of a well-known brand, doesnt matter if it is really quite disappointing or boring. BMW obviously recognised the commericial potential of this segment and created a model for it.

ive never really understood the meaning of drivability or sheer driving pleasure... does it mean cruising at 250kmh with great stability? does it mean ability to take a sharp corner at 120kmh? does it mean the ability to hit 100kmh in 3.5secs? only RWD? will some or all of the above be consider the ultimate driving machine?
i dont know.... the worse drive i had was sitting in a ferrari and the best drive i had was innocently keeping pace with a WRX STI at 99 turns with my old ford focus.

I think to each his own. so i try to respect others choice by being polite...the 316 is a nice ride.:)

Agreed the E39 M5 is the ultimate machine [thumbsup]

Don't share your opinion on the 316 but you already know that [laugh]

Since you have not been long on this forum, let me enlighten you that i am BMW FANBOY. To me, 316 is crap as i am driving the same engine that produce 184hp.

BMW is always about IL6, 50% front/rear weight distribution & RWD.

This is THE ultimate driving machine:

https://youtu.be/q1dYv_gKTA8

Drivablity is nvr about how fast you drive. It is about how well the car could go through corner at whatever speed.

Does it breakaway easily when pushed beyond its limit?

Just ignore david.. His comments are usually overly fanboy hahaha he always say until like he knows bmw in and out.

Just buy a 316i, spend $1k chip it out and its a 320ed.

Seriously.. Singaporeans change cars every 3-5yrs.

Whatever love you have initially will be overcome by new designs and tech.

Just buy the value for money one and enjoy.

We are not in germany or usa.. Knn every f**king traffic light stop go stop go.. Where got need so much power

I still love my 316i no matter what david says. Screw him

Go buy a Infiniti Q50 la! Heard bmw3 no fight haha

Have been contemplating between a 316i and 320ED... Price diff about $11k now.

Would appreciate advice from bimmer enthusiasts which would be a better choice in terms of handling, FC, maintenance, etc.

Many thanks!

Based on comparision chart. Difference is BHP, torque fuel comsumption.

10min job to install and remove

http://www.racechip.com/chiptuning/bmw/3er/f30/316i-100kw/index.php

i'll let you know the butt dyno when i install this next mth..

If not i will go CodeWerx to do a more comprehensive tunning.

They also advised that "The gearbox should enable the sports transmission as a minimum or go for a full transmission tune."

Tuning box - $10xx
Charge pipe (including boost pipe) - $6xx

Option A
Code Sports Transmission - $2xx

Option B
Full transmission tune - $9xx

Dont even need 20k :)

If i want to go even further, then i will upgrade brakes, suspension etc.. but no point la.. all these poison cannot finish doing wan..

Wahhh Ray steady man you decided to go all the way [thumbsup] Please post the dyno figures will interested to see how the chip up helps.

Can I suggest (assuming cost within reason) change the steering to the M sports version? Its a big improvement over the standard steering in terms of feel and its the part of the car you will be hold 90% of the time [cool]

It is true that my comments is overly fanboy. But i know that you have been shortchanged. On stock, i am driving the same engine which has 184hp on stock.

BMW has nvr about the tech inside. It is about the drive. F30 320 is bare minimum for me. The sky is the limit for pwr regardless whether we are in SG or USA or Germany.

What's the pt of buying a car which has to be chipped up??

This is a public forum ... people can say what they want.

If good for your ears ... listen... else just ignore the post.

Anyway, PML is left with the last few 320i ED and I was advised by the SE that they are going to discontinue the model. If those whom are interested, mai tu liao .... you will be getting a pretty limited model.

Anyone would know a 2.0 L 320i is better than a 320i ED, but a 328i would be better than a 320i and a 335i would be better than a 328i and of course there is a M3.

People can talk all they want, you are spending your $$ not them. Buy within your budget, I used to drive a E90 320i and I am being labelled but so what it is still a BMW and I am happy about it.

A bigger car with the same engine for less money? It sounds the opposite of shortchanged.

Lucky you bought yours 2nd hand for a decent price.

The prince engine has many variants, all share the same internals and have the same potential. The reason for the many variants is down to marketing and tax reasons in different countries. It is cheaper for BMW/PSA to vary the engine output through the ECU than producing an entirely different engine.

For this reason, ECU tuning allows the lower variants (116i/316i and overseas 114i) to safely unlock the inherent potential of the engine to 118i/320i ED. 136bhp -> 170 on normal mode, 200+ on sports mode.

Chipping wouldn't make as much sense if you can only get 10% more bhp (e.g. NA cars), but in this scenario and in SG, it makes perfect sense. Anywhere else in the ideal car world, most of us will just buy the M3/M5 with the same money.

Because of the label, you switch to Mercedes?

It is not always about getting power. It is about power to weight.

Regardless whether TC or NA, there is no replacement for displacement.

More $$ to buy bigger car with less pwr

Less $$ to buy smaller car with more pwr

I don't know how to define short change now.

In ideal world, we would buy ///M3 mod to heaven.

Being enthusiast of cars, how many of us drive for the sake of driving?

335 is nice lah. Of course the M3 is one up in terms of almost everything except low end torque. And I was referring to the E9x generation 335 and M3.
