F1enthusiast 1st Gear February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 Have been contemplating between a 316i and 320ED... Price diff about $11k now. Would appreciate advice from bimmer enthusiasts which would be a better choice in terms of handling, FC, maintenance, etc. Many thanks! ↡ Advertisement

inlinesix Hypersonic February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 Both also 316 lah. For 136hp to pull 1.5 ton body, jialat lah. I know the torque is sufficient. That's the opinion some1 driving 1.6L with 184hp pulling 1.2 ton. Somemore, it is the same engine as 316.

F1enthusiast 1st Gear March 1, 2015 Author Share March 1, 2015 Let's not be overly concerned of the price diff. We leave that to PML. We focus here whether the performance of the two 1.6L justifies the price tag. Which would be a better value-for money option. Thanks. are u comparing list prices, if yes then not accurate unlikely actual price difference is only 11k have u checked with SE?
Rayoflight 5th Gear March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 Personally i think 316i sufficient for normal driving.. Not enough? Put to sports mode and use manual steptronic shifting. I get better fc with manual shifting from what i observed as i shift at my desired rpm.. Interior wise not much diff, just that speedometer is different. Externally no diff Did u consider the jaguar xf 2.2d? Haha.. Solid price now
Mercury1 Turbocharged March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 Well you need the price to know which is better value for money But seriously PML always plays around with various options in the car to give people a sense of more "value for money" so you will need to consider the additional options on the 320ED vs tge 316i (price diff 15K. For example 320 ED might have a better audio system which is 3K upgrade etc. Let's not be overly concerned of the price diff. F1enthusiast 1st Gear March 1, 2015 Author Share March 1, 2015 My usage would not be high. Hence, have never considered a diesel car. As one knows, test drive only provided that moment of experience. Only those who drive the car daily would know best its performance & how to make the drive better. Am thinking the ED has a higher hp & toque, can it be a good alternative to the 320i & not feel "draggy" like the 316i? Pretty apprehensive about the ED as there are not many on the road. coldboy1357 1st Gear March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 (edited) from what i heard, 316i and 320i ED have exactly the same specs, except for different rim design. So essentially you pay extra for the horsepower only. Edited March 1, 2015 by coldboy1357
Mercury1 Turbocharged March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 Ask the people on the BMW SG forum, there are a couple of 320 ED owners there. They seem to have a positive experience with the car, My usage would not be high. Hence, have never considered a diesel car.As one knows, test drive only provided that moment of experience. Ngbernie 3rd Gear March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 Are there many differences in the options list? Hardware is 99% identical between the 2, including engine internals. If you prefer a faster ride but averse to engine tuning, go with the ED. Otherwise, the 316i.
Civic6228 6th Gear March 2, 2015 Share March 2, 2015 I would buy the one that is manufactured in Germany. I believe the ED is Made in Germany and the 316i is Made in SA.

carma1965 1st Gear April 20, 2015 Share April 20, 2015 test drove the 316 and it was a good drive...but there were obvious quality difference compared to the 320ED... maybe it really was not made in Germany? Anyway i believe it doesnt matter....still a very nice car... though slightly underpowered.
