SINGAPORE - The couple behind socio-political website The Real Singapore (TRS) have had their licence to operate the website suspended by the Media Development Authority (MDA).

Explaining its first such move, the MDA said TRS had published material that is objectionable on the grounds of public interest, public order and national harmony.

No new articles can be posted on the site with immediate effect, and the site itself must be taken down by 8pm on Sunday, said the MDA in a media briefing on Sunday afternoon

Very good :)

Just hope this couple don't go use other websites to post suspicious articles ....

They will definitely be under the radar during this period

TRS states that its website is hosted in Sweden, USA and Switzerland. MDA said previously, Takagi and Yang were "out of the jurisdiction of the Broadcasting Act as they were running their operations outside Singapore". However, since December, the two have been running their operations from Singapore, bringing them within the jurisdiction of the Act, MDA said.

MDA is right in theory but if I were these guys, I can easily circumvent this ruling by handing over the website to someone outside of Singapore and Singapore's jurisdiction.

Good riddance...

Although some of their articles are alright but as time goes, they swayed badly to side with the wrong, especially with Roy and Amos.

What you are saying is that they have different opinions from you with regards to certain issues. I feel that should be respected if we are going to continue as a democratic nation.

What is unacceptable is how they make up stories to rile up the population. Making up clickbait stories are fine only when it doesn't delve into politics (otherwise stomp, her world and TNP will also be shut down).

This high-handed move will no doubt attract criticism, but I agree with it.

How about Stomp leh? If want to say causing harm to national harmony, I'm sure Stomp will be even more guilty of it...

Yes, that's what I was talking about. Inciting hatred on everything under the Singapore sun. I'm not a supporter of PAP by any means but some of the false information they post online can easily influence people who cannot think for themselves.

Has TJS joined TOC? And it may be banned because a major opposition figure is onboard? I don't think TOC intentionally and wilfully publishes false/ misleading news and reports. Maybe you can enlighten me.

But then, I am sure many will have no qualms with certain websites being shut down when they don't agree with their views. Intolerance is getting popular these days.

Possible alternatives for alternative sites if they do surface. . . .

Commenting on the possibility of copycat sites, former NMP Calvin Cheng said anonymity on the Internet is not a guarantee.

“At the end of the day, nobody is truly anonymous on the Internet. If they break severe enough laws, wherever they are they can be hunted down and international arrest warrants issued,” said Mr Cheng, a member of the Media Literacy Council.
