Dear all

I am a newbie to this forum.

I've read this topic with interest and will like to join the mid-career change for nurse course too. But I am subjected to yearly reservist call-up. Thus, I will like to enquire from anyone who is a current trainee for this course, or has already graduated from the course, how do you deal with your reservist call-up. Getting a deferment or just go for reservist?

thanks.

My experience.

When I was doing my full time advanced diploma in nursing, I had reservist call up also. I applied for deferment since my course is full time.

When working there is no issue. Go for reservist. The hospital will not hold you back from reservist training. From my experience they even let me go even though I was still on probation (changed jobs).

Hope this helps.

Curtin has nursing course at balestier campus. Not sure is for a entry level or already nurse.

http://www.healthprofessionals.gov.sg/content/hprof/snb/en/leftnav/accreditation_of_nursing_education_programmes/accredited_nursing_programmes/pre_registration_pre_enrolment_programmes.html

Not entry level. For practicing nurses only. From what I know now, only NYP, NP and NUS conduct courses leading to registration as nurses. For parkway college, I understand that ONLY current students are still eligible for registration as nurses. Until SNB gives the go ahead.

Saf medic boy lagi more stress. i remember I went CMPB to do my blood test. That time still in no stomp but have MCF.

He insert the needle on my left hand and I see his needle going in circle under my skin. I told him he can try on my right as the needle is still in my hand somehow held hostage. He gratefully thank me and change hand. Thank god he manage to draw blood on my right hand.

When I thought it is all over he say your left hand have blood clot he use the bandage gauze and rub the left hand he say to prevent blood clot.

Nurse and medic not easy please be nice to them. When my grandfather was admitted to hospital be be private or government a small treat will brighten their day.

a medic took my blood for test when i was warded in in AH. The fella told me to look away but i didnt as i wanted to see the needle go in......knn...he pulled the syringe so bloody fast that i nearly gave him a punch right then! After that they forced me to take a cold shower with a big MP standing outside the cubicle to bring my temperature down....knn.

Maybe the hospital should be run like that.

In the hotel, the people that are visiting are in closed to perfect health. The hotel workers are not really well paid and if I were to make a guess, almost same level of pay but with different stress level.

The hospital is where the patient needs care and rest. The hotel, less so, because the visitors are mostly out partying or going to the office. Maybe peace and quiet after 10pm and a good bed.

So why is the hospital not run like a hotel???

I mean its really a paradigm shift. But the question here is shouldn't the service effectiveness be at that level?

hotel only need housekeeping to confirm nothing took from the minibar, hospital needs doctors to certify a patients on every account to be discharged, and doctor has many patient and not sitting there to sign discharge form.

A few decades ago when I was in NS, we went Ex Crescendo. During the mandatory blood test post-ex, I told the medic (A) to take from my left hand. He inserted needle into <dunno the name, but it's the part on the top of the elbow, where blood is normally drawn>. When he pulled the syringe, no blood... So he pushed the needle head a bit deeper [ouch], still no blood. And then he shifted needle head a bit to the left [ouch], still no blood. Then right [ouch], same... By that time, his hands already trembling. I looked at him, and had to tell him to relax lah, don't be nervous... bloody hell, i si bey scared as needle was still in my arm...

Then he retracted whole syringe. And said try the wrist instead. Repeated the same thing, same result...

And he gave up, called another medic (B) to try. Medic B said my left hand cannot, and tried on my right. Did the same thing [ouch], same result. Next asked medic C, who tried on my right wrist. Same process [ouch], same result.

They all [sweatdrop] , and I really wanted to  [bigcry]

Finally got a fourth medic D, who came and tried on my left hand again (can't remember same location or not). This fifth attempt by the fourth medic was finally successful...

bloody hell, next day my 2 hands got many blue-blacks...

1-2 yr later, when i went to HSA for another blood test, the young doc on duty looked at my veins, then decided not to try. He promptly asked a middle-aged (looked very experienced) nurse to get the blood from me instead...

Lucky in recent years, for my annual health screenings, they have no problem getting my blood at first tries...
