SINGAPORE - A young girl allegedly swiped a diamond ornament worth several hundred thousand dollars from a shop at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on Christmas night last year.

Evening daily Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday that a man and a woman, with a girl who looked around 10 years old, had entered the Bulgari store at MBS. They behaved like a family.

But while they were there, the girl allegedly swiped a diamond ornament worth several hundred thousand dollars from a display case.

She was caught on closed-circuit television, kneeling in front of the case and appeared to reach for something, while the man and woman were talking to shop staff.

The police confirmed that a theft had occurred in the building along Bayfront Avenue, and they had been called in at 11.08 pm on Christmas night. Investigations are ongoing.

Shopowners at MBS were issued letters from the police alerting them to the incident.

On Friday in Hong Kong, a girl believed to be aged between 12 and 14 is said to have unlocked a case in Emperor Jewellery shop at the 1881 Heritage shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui.

She allegedly stole a necklace worth HK$36 million (S$6.2 million), while two women and a man distracted the shop staff.

The modus operandi also bore similarities to an incident in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 16 last year. Three women and a girl, who appeared around 10 years old, made off with a RM5.2 million (S$1.9 million) yellow diamond ring.

Hong Kong (AFP) - Hong Kong police say they are hunting a girl aged between 12 and 14 years old over the theft of a diamond necklace worth more than HK$36 million (US$4.6 million) from a luxury jewellery store.

Police say she helped carry out the audacious theft with two women and a man, all aged between 30 and 40.

The adults "pretended to be customers choosing items from the shop" police said, while the girl stole the necklace.

The gang of four then left the store before a staff member realised it was missing.

The necklace was 100-carat gold embedded with more than 30 diamonds, the South China Morning Post said, and police confirmed it was worth HK$36 million.

The young girl managed to steal a key from a drawer to open a cabinet while staff were distracted, the SCMP said, citing an unnamed police source.

"The three adults posed as big spenders and demanded employees show them jewellery in an apparent move to divert staff attention," the source said.

Local media reported that the theft was from the Emperor Jewellery store in the Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district, but the store would not confirm it had been targeted when contacted by AFP.

The girl was caught on CCTV as she left the mall, the SCMP said, showing a picture of a girl dressed in black trousers, a blue shirt and a grey hooded top.

Police described her as "slimly built".

The gang spent around half an hour in the shop and staff did not notice the necklace was missing until later in the day, the SCMP added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have not ruled out the possibility that suspects involved in a RM5.2 million diamond ring heist at a mall in Bukit Bintang on Jan 16, have fled the country.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said police have however, sought the assistance of the Interpol to track down the suspects while security and entry and exit points had also been tightened.

"Police have already identified the syndicate involved and the suspects, especially the two women and a 10-year-old girl, who were involved in the organised crime," he told reporters at a Crime Prevention Seminar at the Universiti Malaya campus, here, today.

Mohmad said police had also distributed photo fit of the suspects to member of the public.

During the 3pm robbery at an exclusive jewellery shop in Bukit Bintang, the suspects had entered the premises, pretending to look at a selection of diamonds.

The girl had allegedly unlocked the glass showcase while the women distracted the three sales assistants by pretending to look at a selection of jewellery in a different part of the store.

It is learnt that the little girl had signalled the women to leave the store as soon as she had removed the diamond ring from the display case and returned the key at its original spot.-- BERNAMA

Its to do with age. As she grows older she will be too tall and people will not ignore

 

her as a child but give her their full attention in the shop as an adult.

 

As a child and being short she can duck under the display units and lifts

 

things out but not when she is a fully grown adult.

Her live is ruined, she should be in school , learning the skills for life , making friends.

 

Now she cant really have a normal lives and high chance she will land in jail one day

It depends on how you look at it. Maybe she becomes a millionaire at a young adult while normal school kid that turn adults still have to work.

when i was in hk ... the PRC was looking at several (at least > 5) rolexes at once ... with several changing hands and trying on

at that time i was already thinking those "fast hand" type can easily switch one rolex out without even notice
