(edited)

I only remember once , the bus driver was so frustrated that he opened the exit and told those still trying to board the bus to enter from the exit.

Dunno how many never tapped the card but there was a rush and the queue was cleared.

Not sure if the bus company condones such act but since he was not anal about ppl tapping in the front first, I think his actions are good.

For the record, I did not board that bus but was at the bus stop and witnessed this. I think those who boarded from the exit got free rides. HHahah. Maybe I am not civic minded when I say this but I really liked that action. The h... with the profits. Hahah

This was already happening during the early 90's when I was in SP trying to board bus 74. As 74 serve SP, NUS and NP, the double deck bus is always swarmed with students at the bus stop. And since most of us buy monthly bus stamp, the driver automatic open the exit door for us to board the bus.

I not sure abt now, I think now still the same.

I want to get this off my chest. Why do people not move back in the bus? As a frequent bus traveller, I want to explain why it is not so easy to move back.

If you look at the below picture, you realise this is standard for SMRT buses. So why do people not move back?

1) With no space to put the foot under the chair, it is impossible for people to stand behind the other when standing at the back. Hence, people can only stand in a single file. Unless they are very small.

2) With the upraised end at the end, people cannot stand on it safely when the bus is in motion. From the outside, it does appear that the people do not move back.

3) With the curve at the back, it appears from outside that people are not standing closely to each other when in reality it is not always the case. It just appears that there is a distance between the standing passengers at the back.

It is true there are inconsiderate jokers around but the design of the bus is not helping.

Recommendations

1) Widen the standing space at the back

2) Have an overhead compartment like the tour buses so thart people can put their backpacks, haversacks and briefcases on it so that there will be more standing room overall. A lot of the space is taken up by the backpacks, school bags and so on.

I am writing this to SMRT also but tot of posting it here as well. Will update on outcome [bounce2]

Actualy when i use to take bus, i didnt like going all the way to back, maybe just 75% to the back will be my limit especialy when im alighting in a few stops, this is because im scared very hard to squeeze out when its my turn to alight. Also, when u stand in the middle, somehow your brian thinks that ul have more chances of getting a seat when some1 stands up, cos at the centre theres more seats around you.

I think its just human nature, not realy because people are stubborn, the real issue is having world class public transport where you need to squeeze in as many people as you can in 1 bus, tink that should be the issue to concentrate on.

bus can try alarm/buzzing sound with arrow pointing inwards control by captain may work

as commuters will react with the sound and indicator to alert. Passengers can be irritated

and possibilities of moving in.

The fault is not so much in the bus design but the selfishness of the people.

Once, I saw a crowd of people shouting from outside the bus for people inside the bus to move to the back.

The people inside the bus didnt care.

It is a total disgrace on the passengers' part.

Ppl don't move behind for very obvious reasons... and that's becos of KS !

KS - Kiasu, scared cannot leave bus early to run to catch the train and scared of not becoming the 1st person to exit :D

KS - Kiasi, scared that once bus is on fire, not the first one to escape :D

Actually such behavior is not uniquely Singapore. It happens everywhere even in Europe. Fully pack train will only happen if the boarding traffic is massive where everyone is force to occupy the last square of centimeter.
