Philipkee Twincharged January 13, 2015 Author Share January 13, 2015 (edited) Recommendations 1) Widen the standing space at the back - Where to put the wheels? Rethink design. Do away with seats, have single seater at that area. You can have areas blocked up for the wheels but not necc to block up the entire passageway like in the picture 2) Have an overhead compartment like the tour buses so thart people can put their backpacks, haversacks and briefcases on it so that there will be more standing room overall. A lot of the space is taken up by the backpacks, school bags and so on. Security issue. I disagree. Anyone carrying a haversack might carry a bomb. All buses stop at a terminal. Not like SMRT that goes to a terminal and picks up passengers and so on. At the terminal, thebus can be swept clean of any left behind objects. If the worry is that someone can leave the bag behind and gets off, well, the bag was on the bus, well, even without the overhead compartment, he can still accidentally leave it behind as well. By the way, when I meant overhead compartment, I know i used tour buses as an example but the overhead compartment can be an open concept where everyone can see the haversack. Like the overhead compartment in tour bus minus the upholstery (transparent plastic) and the door (can be slightly upraised to prevent it from falling out when the bus turns. The plastic should have sufficient friction since the 1) passenger who makes use of it is standing by the bag 2) Unless it is a metal briefcase, the average school bag should have sufficient friction 3) Strategically placed non slip mats like the ones on a car dash board (but glued to the plastic) could provide the friction and yet not inhibit visibility. A lot of the space is taken up by the backpacks, school bags and so on. The above recommendations will in return create another problem. 1) By widening the space at the back means less seats. Next thing you know, just like the MRT carriage, all buses become standing only. 2) Like another member said, will waste time getting the bags while alighting. Some are just short distance like feeder bus packed during peak hours, where got time to take out ipod, zip the bag, put the bag onto the compartment, then take a seat. Repeat the process while alighting. Imagine doing these tasks when the bus is jam crowded?? Neh... To me it's the current situation is ok lah. The rear of the bus also need some space for those sitting to manoeuvre while disembarking. If all airtight behind, then very hard for the last person sitting right at the corner back to alight.

You might be right. Just that if I am seated, I will not put m bag on the overhead compartment since it can be on my lap. (that's me but not necc all) Current situation is still ok but moving forward, if the overcrowding continues, I think we have to proactively try out new solutions rather than maintain staus quo until something happens THEN brainstorm. And yea, while I am still a missy, I am in management position now and I realise that management sometimes can be slow to effect changes until someone cho cho them.

Nzy Twincharged January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 (edited) People will move back if you ask them to. It'll be better if everyone just moves back without people asking them to though. Edited January 13, 2015 by Nzy
Ghgan 5th Gear January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 Actually the bus company can just install a pre-recorded announcement in all 4 languages to ask the passenger to move back to the end of the bus. The bus captain just need to press a button to activate the announcement if he see the front of the bus is crowded and there are space in the back of the bus or go up to upper deck for double deck buses.

Neutrino Supercharged January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 People don't move to back of bus because they want to be near door to get off first to buy Premium Cherries at NTUC for S$40 + per kg.
Maxus-MIFA9 Supersonic January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 My recommendation : those who goes the back of the bus will get a 10% discount of the fare and those choose to stand in the front will pay 5% more..... This way, all will move to the back ....

Yes. This is a low cost but could be effective solution. The floor near the front area can be installed with hot air outlets, the driver can activate hot air from the engine thru these outlets when he sees the crowd is not moving to the rear. Just use hot air to make such inconsiderate passengers uncomfortable until the move away.
Mcf777 Turbocharged January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 Blame the govt for not educating the public enough. Dont blame the bus. Even on the elevator, u can see idiots holding hands side by side and blocking the right lane. In Japan or Korea or even Taiwan, everyone very Zhi tong. All kept to one side.

Atonchia Supersonic January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 因為后面有鬼。 Because moving to the back, feels like doing pole dancing for those seated in the last few rows.
