Best used car for big family?

Hi, I just got my driving license last month and would like to purchase a used car for both family purpose and also gain some practical skills. I stay with wife, a one-year old baby and parents. Hence I believe a big car is necessary but not MPV as it is to big for newbie.

As the family is big, I think a 2.0L is a must, thus I have shortlisted Kia Magentis, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Cefiro, Mazda 6 and Subaru Legcy. Prefer to buy a car registered in 2016 or 2017 because eventually I may have to buy a MPV when second baby comes.

Please share your opinion on these cars: i.e interior space (2 adults and a safety seat in rear row), FC, reliability and cost. Thank You!

Think you can just get a small car since there is only at most 5 of you. Small car also a lot easier to handle since you new driver. Just make sure the boot is big enough since all the seats will be filled up. Save the extra money and buy a brand new car that you like in 2016/7.

2, I checked the price of 1.6L ending in 2016/2017 (Altis, Latio, Lancer, Avente), annual depreciation is almost the same as 2.0L. I believe the major difference is 2-3K on FC and road tax?

Nope. I think a 2.0L sedan is a safer choice?

Small car could be a little squeeze, just a little. But if you always need to ferry at full house and travel long distance, maybe a bigger car is better.

 

But for newbie, smaller car definitely easier to drive, and won't irritate impatient people like me going into carpark😄

Yes, a sedan is definitely better for a newbie. Depends on your budget, if you can afford, of course 2.0L is better. Better pick up and cruising. Smaller sedans like Altis also not too bad. Not really a terrible squeeze unless the adults are big size.

you shortlisted cars' size almost same or bigger than normal MPVs, such as Wish, Stream, etc,

only deiff is 5 seat instead of 7 seat,

as new driver, better start from mid-size sedan, like Altis, K3, Avante, Elantra,

You can give Honda odyssey a try. Big and stable, more than enough room for everyone. I have a huge family, was driving exora for 4 years before changing to this marvellous mpv recently. I used to fetch my wife, 4 children, my father and in laws when going outing. I still can keep huge luggage behind.

 

2.4 cc is just nice for family, neither too fast nor too slow. As for fc, the previous owner has done a lot of fuel saver gadgets. 60 litres of fuel can go around 650km with plus minus city drive. Best to check the engine compartment when you purchase; gear box, water pump, belts, brake pump, mounting and suspension. I was pretty lucky to have a hassle free odyssey as the first owner was a car maniac who love to protect his car like his wife. Awesome exterior and interior with multiple gadgets. Look around for good mpv is not easy, trust your family and bring them along to find the best mpv you want. They have extra eyes to see and feel. Remember to test drive slow and steady!

 

 

Oh yes, make sure the mpv u gonna purchase still have roadtax to carry on, best to have more months.

Think u need to test drive those shortlisted cars and buy what u like and can afford. If got time, no better make time to read thru threads on tips on buying used rides and blacklist so u can minimise looking like a juicy carrot.

 

good luck on your car shopping! Dun rush and 2016 or 2017 sounds right....kidding. Pls dun take offence.

Rather than asking for advice, why not go & rent a car to try out?

 

My advice is to get a super small car to drive solo until u r familiar with real life driving condition & road names.

 

Otherwise, u gonna stress out driving your family & parents.

 

Lastly, avoid right most lane cause u gonna hog it.

Think the problem for newbie is not hogging, but over confident. Drive slowly TS, especially when you ferrying your family. Experiences take time to accumulate, new driver tends not to foresee dangerous situation.

Given your requirements, u may wish to consider the Nissan Sylphy.

Too expensive and no 2016/2017 model, right?

Im driving a nissan latio and we can still squeeze 4 adults and 2 children in even till KL recently.

Sounds good but do you use safety seats?
