My car can roll down a gentle slope on free gear for 7 to 9 km at above 50kph. Does it consume the same amount of petrol as a stationary car with engine on for the same time.

Yes it does. The engine is still running. Unless you meant to shut off engine and let it roll or human behind the car pushing it.:D

Don't do that kind of "coasting" on an auto modern cars of today; Olden days mechanical cars can but also dangerous, especially on curved roads; good old days used to do that to my dads old car way back in the 90's from Benjamin Sheares bridge ........... can like almost go about 3-4km ( I think so )

The irony is some car manufacturers are doing it now, even for a manual gearbox, just to "save" (if it really save) a few drops of fuel. All these "overwrite" by computers are just too dangerous. The constant disengaging and latency in re-engaging is just not worth the trouble and potential safety.

Bro....... thats why i mentioned olden manual car ( i reckon they should be those mfg before 1990's or  even earlier) for those BnB cars ....... the high end ones started toying with electronics way before that even for all those creature comforts like power steering ........ I reckon we are saying power off completely
