Do you know why things are done this way?

The other counter point to consider...

What do you do if your 1 year old reaches towards an open flame?

Stop him / her and possibly beat her hand right?

After a while the kid knows not to reach towards open flame.

Do you really want every kid to have to burn themselves to understand that you don't touch fire?

Sometimes things are done a certain way for a good reason - even if we don't understand the reason, it doesn't invalidate it.

You just want to argue huh??

The situation here is to agree...

Argue schmargue...

Cute little analogies like this drive me batty...

There was a perfectly good reason for the behaviour ---

And throughout history, learning from our elders, from their experience, from their mistakes is a good thing.

So let's put it another way - what if the monkeys knew why they shouldn't climb the ladder?

Should they send up a volunteer once a month just to see if the other monkeys still get doused in cold water?

What is the solution here?

What the experiment has shown is "insitutional knowledge" - which in most organisations is considered a good thing

the traditional ones sold by mamak wearing sarong and wrapped in a conical singtel yellow pages i like....the newer gen found nowadays like no soul wan....maybe i just prefer those of the older generation. You innuendos quite strong yar....hahaha!

The reason the traditional nuts taste better is nowadays

the seller does not wear a sarong anymore and

doesn't scratch underneath before serving the nuts.

What we have here is failure to communicate.. whistle...

The old bird monkey didn't explain to the new bird why one should not climb the ladder.

We human have better communication and therefore by right should not have this problem. Some people are too lazy to explain, just expect you to follow instruction.

Very interesting experiment. Many instances in real life.

I heard of a similar experiment but with a slightly different outcome.

After a period of time, one of the monkey got smart and gathered everyone monkey to discuss the futility of their violent behavior. What they needed to do was to unite and agree that everyone will be given their fair chance to climb the ladder. No monkeys will be left behind. He devised a scheme where the highest bidder every 2 weeks gets the climb the ladder to avoid arguments. It worked. However the banana has been replaced with a printed version. None of the monkeys knew any better than they have to get on the ladder at this point because, well, because. The scheme works so well that the monkey, who is now the leader (because he is clever) has plans to install another ladder and introduce another 50 monkeys into the cage. And for all his troubles, he will be paid peanuts. Well, at least the monkeys are not resorting to vigilante actions anymore.

Apologies if I am off topic. Has anyone heard of this experiment? Basically its an experiment to see howfar will we go to obey authority.

This has implications to statements that the Nazis were merely following orders.

Do you think this might describe us as well in a less drastic version? Can someone help me embed? Paibsei

That was exactly my point, albeit not in so many words.

I don't think SGD15K a month is peanuts.. Well, you can buy a lot of peanuts with 15K, but it's not peanuts.. =D

Monthly salary scale:

5K = "derisory"

40K (500K/yr) = "undignified"

50K (600K/yr) = "peanuts"

I guess this is between derisory and undignified. :D

And it looks like we'll be needing a whole new lexicon for money in Sinkapoor soon. [laugh]
