Helping a friend to sell off his car. Below are details:

 

Subaru Forester 2.0L

SGZ9478B

Selling Price: $18,000 (Negotiable)

Registration Date: 5th July 2006

Based on OMV of about 17k for Forester reg Jul 06, your friend is asking 8.65k for 3 months of depreciation. 30k for 1 year. Nice...

No leh, checked OneMotoring and it tallies, original reg date is Jul 06.

 

The price would be more reasonable if it was really a 2007 car, about 7k depre.

For the benefit of ppl in this thread left with 3-4 months cars, what you think should be a fair and reasonable dep per month for both buyer am seller?

it seems like a lot of sellers are asking for value about 6-9k per annum above paper value generally in this thread. For me, I would not be willing to pay that kind of amount for a car with 3-4 months left as the inconvenience of admin(going to LTA, applying for season parking, finding insurance companies who is willing to accept short term coverage at a higher fee etc) is far more than than the benefits of the slightly lower asking price compared to car dealers. And not forgetting the risks that the car may fail as it approaches the end of its lifespan. Lemon law also does not cover direct selling. Went to see one car with 6 months left and it was in terrible condition. Oil was changed last April and battery is long overdue for replacement. There was a strange sound when the air con was turned on and the owner was asking for 4K above paper value. Needless to say, I walked away from the deal and got a much better deal.

No typo. I counter-check the number plate with him. As for the price, he said can nego. If interested, can contact him for viewing.

Maybe the car without aircon is to teach his wife a lesson. Haha.

 

 

Cos the seller who is an Indian national told my BIL that he is looking for a less than one year old left car for his wife to drive. His reason, he felt my BIL was damn honest to point out the faults of the car... Haha.. Good one for my BIL.

It's true that lemon law does not cover all things. In fact, looking at the blacklist of used car dealers thread.... one can see that there's also a lot of difficulties in getting compensation even with CASE accredited dealers. My previous car was bought from one and I have my own negative experience with them as well.

 

But, when buying cars from used car dealers, I find that the pros of used car dealers are:

1. If they have good reputation, they will usually try to uphold it. Some used car dealers have pretty high premiums on their used cars, but so far, I have not seen any complaints on the threads about them as they will follow up if there's any problem with the cars they sold. I personally know of one company like this. But the prices they charged for their used cars are higher than the market rates.  

2.  It is more hassle free as they will settle the admin part for you. For example, getting carloan/insurance/changing car plate numbers or even some basic servicing of the car(not all dealers will do this though). Whether it's worth paying a premium for this, it's subjective. Some people would rather pay more to save the hassle. 

 

Disadvantage of buying from used car dealers:

1. High prices, or sometimes, a lot of hidden fees that you may not be aware of. Cannot choose bank loans or insurance that is cheaper for you.

2. May not be easy to get compensation for lemon cars. Had one experience myself.

 

Pros of buying from direct sellers:

1. Prices are lower than used car dealers as there is no third party to pay. 

2. You choose your own bank loans and insurance. May be able to get cheaper deals. 

 

Disadvantage of buying from direct sellers:

1. Have to settle admin on your own.(car transfer, car loans, insurance etc). 

2. Lemon laws do not apply to direct sellers. Your car comes as it is. Any problem later on is your problem.

for a bread and butter car that has no COE renewal potential but to drive to the end and killed, pricing should really be based on paper + body (referencing pricing in sgcarquotz thread and not some anyhow hantam pricing) + small premium (not more than $500/mth surely).

 

the cars that some sellers are asking for seemingly more, I think the seller are pricing on the assumption that buyer are buying to renew COE

- PARF: $9,872

- Mileage: Only 89,000km as of 24 March 2016. I am a 2nd owner and i only clock around 40km per day.

- Bought the car 2 yrs ago from car dealer who is a friend's friend

- Always go for regular servicing (every 10k)

 

I booked a new Qashqai and car only coming end April/May. So looking to let go my Civic around 1st week of May

looking at the other thread where dealers, be it exporter or whoever buys in 8-10 yrs old car at ridiculously low price, surely many mcfers can offer a few hundreds more than them.
