If you are referring to BMW, they can cost a lot to maintain. Engine oil and coolant leaks are commonplace. The 6 speed auto gearbox is known to jerk especially before coming to a stop. You can easily spend thousands on repairs. I drive a e90 320i and it breaks down unless I pray to ti gong.

Really? Isn't that just due to poor maintenance and rough handling of the car?

You sold to the dealer alr? How much (were?) you asking?

The question is how much did the dealer take it for?

This is because it is much cheaper to buy a 9 year old Jap car. The absolute price is low and hence there is a bigger market of buyers and don't forget cant take loans for 9+ year old cars. Dealers also usually very happy to take this

For conti cars, esp 9 year old BMW, fewer but more wary buyers

Unless buyer knows seller very well, then it is a win win situation

If buyer has cash, and if depre is low, then some smart buyers will bite just for the badge

If you factor in the original price of the car, a BMW is definitely worth it at 9k per year. Why get a Japanese car at 11-12k when you can get a BMW at 9k?

What I cannot stand is owners of popular makes like Altis, Mazda 3 and Civc have to sell their car with a depreciation of 11-12k per year when their car is nearly 9 years old. It just doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure if they were to sell it off to a dealer, they won't even get that much. Probably paper value and 2-3k extra. When someone who's interested offers a decent price which is definitely more than what the dealer will offer, they decline. KNNCCB.

I think if you provide more details here, someone might take you up on your offer. At least share the price, reg date and PARF value at 10th year, it may help others to make a decision.

Up for you.

I found it posted earlier in thread.

PARF value 29,165, so he wants $34,000/$35,000. COE until Dec 24 this year.

It isn't cheaper. The price of the car seems a lot lower in comparison to that of a conti car around the same age. But the depreciation is crazy. Imagine 11-12k depreciation for an old car which would only have been about 5-6k depreciation when the first owner got the car. WTF. Getting a conti car makes more sense because when brand new, the annual depreciation would range from 15-20k. Now you can get one depreciating at 9k per year, why not? Isn't the reason why you'd buy a second hand car because the previous owner would have bore the brunt of the initial depreciation?

This just proves that cash is king. If you have the cash, you can easily afford a BMW that will depreciate less than a stupid Altis. Instead all these people who are desperate for a car have to make do with your typical "bread and butter" cars. Save some cash and get something luxurious.

I'm not sure why people always say conti cars give problems, etc. They're pretty reliable if well looked after. You may have to replace wear and tear parts every now and then but that's about it.

Good Deal!

Can share whether it has any engine oil leaks, coolant leaks or whether it has the infamous gearbox jerk, especially when it is coming to a stop?

Most car owners will not bother to maintain their cars if they are going to sell it soon. A lot of car owners also sell their cars because their cars have problems. My friend has a 523i and his gearbox jerks just before the car comes to a stop. PML quoted $6K for repair. Outside workshop quoted $2k to change solenoids, ATF and filter but cannot guarantee that the problem would be resolved after repair. My friend intends to sell off the car and purchase a new one when COE falls. His car moves, but gearbox failure is imminent and it is difficult to tolerate such obvious problems.

Seems like you are very into bmw and know all its problems. Why don't you come and test drive and then post your review here.

Why those conti car with 1 year left, the dep. is lower the jap car is because the parf value is very high

hard to get loan if the buyer need to, or if approve, the month payment will be very high

Like a BMW 523, parf value around 29K + dep let's say 10K, total around 30K

DP 50%, need to loan 20K for 1 year to pay

Also, if the 1 year left problem free, then ok, but if kena one major repair, jialat leow

can cost many Ks and not worth to repair since left 1 year

So only buy if you know the owner very well like a good friend

But then, if your good friend screw you, then L. L also

Wah lao eh. 9 year old car still need loan ah? Unless you're running a rental business, a loan for such a car is silly.
