Dr Hon did not comment on the contents of the booklet in his letter, saying only that it was a “source of unhappiness”. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/hwa-chong-design-its-own-workshops-future SINGAPORE — Following feedback from a student that a workshop on managing relationships was sexist in content, Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) said it plans to design its own workshops in the future. In a letter to students and teachers yesterday — a copy of which was seen by TODAY — HCI principal Hon Chiew Weng said the school had concluded its internal investigation into the complaint and found that the facilitators of the workshop in question were ineffective in addressing the participants’ concerns. Earlier this week, HCI student Agatha Tan set off a wave of controversy with a Facebook post on her concerns about the workshop conducted by Focus on the Family Singapore, a vendor appointed by the Ministry for Social and Family Development (MSF). In particular, she took issue with a booklet distributed during the workshop, which she said ”seemed to emphasise and enforce traditional gender roles in a relationship”. Dr Hon did not comment on the contents of the booklet in his letter, saying only that it was a “source of unhappiness”. He pointed out that the feedback from the students was that one facilitator in particular was unable to address their concerns “satisfactorily” when several of them objected to viewpoints that had been raised during a discussion. The workshop, one of several on managing relationships, was held for the HCI students last week. Students who attended a similar workshop held in another venue were happy and the facilitators were professional and qualified their claims, added Dr Hon. These facilitators recognised that the views put forth in class were generalisations that do not apply to everyone and when referring to controversial viewpoints, they were open to alternative explanations and perspectives, he added. He added that the school had previously used the vendor’s services and the students’ feedback had been positive. ↡ Advertisement
Ktglfc Hypersonic October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 The student was not satisfied that a woman is deemed to have a traditional gender roles in a relationship. Likely she wants equal rights. She can say now, but in future, when she have a family, have kids, she will likely devote much time in taking care of the kids... unless, she wants the hubby to be in the house all the time... Anyway, Aware haven't come out to say anything... Want equal rights? Then abolish the Woman Chapter lor... As long as there is Woman's Chapter, there will never be equal rights, and these woman must understand that. You cannot have the best of both worlds.

Scans from the pamphlet, titled It's UNcomplicated and produced by Focus on the Family's Singapore chapter, include lines such as "No means yes? Yes means no?" that have been criticized as sexist and promoting rape culture. A two-page spread shows a comparison chart of "If she says...She really means" with "interpretations," suggesting for example that if a woman says "Do I look fat?" she really means, "Tell me I'm beautiful." Meanwhile, the opposite page for men says that what "he says" is always the same as what "he really means." Jellandross Supersonic October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 (edited) Actually these examples looked pretty accurate to me. I showed my wife and she agrees. Many of her girl friends behave exactly like these "she says" examples. But of course, if a girl fits into this type of behavioral profile, reading this would be like a rude slap to her face. It's like telling a road hogger to his face that he is really a nuisance to others. There will be hell to pay for whoever dare to write such blasphemy! Not following this topic too closely but I assume the complainant here is a woman? Edited October 12, 2014 by Jellandross

I find it pretty hilarious and at the same time quite true. I wonder if it's somethng wrong with me coz I don't seemed offended and compelled to write in to the authorities to demand a stop to this ridiculous stereotype of men. Sosaria Twincharged October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 I guess nothing is absolute and you can't pigeon-hole people into traditional gender roles these days. Usually the gender roles are more blurred these days with husbands also sharing the household chores and women earning as much if not more than their hubbies. Traditional gender roles are generally maintained only when the wife is less educated or a house-wife

So its "traditional Christian value" that men think with their penis? This is what they teach in Christian churches? What is there to be offended then? It must be God's words and who are we to argue with them. Usually the gender roles are more blurred these days with husbands also sharing the household chores and women earning as much if not more than their hubbies. Traditional gender roles are generally maintained only when the wife is less educated or a house-wife Actually, the dynamics between a couple should solely be between the couple. If a couple is comfortable with a more "traditional" role then why should someone else come in and tell them it is wrong and that there should be more equality? Just the other day, I read an article (I think it was in ST) that claims it is abuse if I tell my wife to do the housework and if I control who she meets and how often she meets them. Well, I immediately called my wife over to read the article and we had a good laugh over it.
Icemaiden 6th Gear October 13, 2014 Share October 13, 2014 Not exactly accurate. Some women are capable of meaning yes when they say yes and no when they say no. It's very dangerous to spread this type of message. It's trying to say if a woman say no to sex, it actually means yes because women always lie. Many women are capable of keeping time and being punctual and 5 minutes does not mean 30 minutes. Maybe your wife and her friends behave this way but I'm sure there are other women who can keep time and mean what they say, not only at home but at the work place as well. This can be quite insulting to the general female population because after all, there are women who do not lie and mean what they say. And "sure go ahead" means "I don't want to"? What kind of education is this? Actually these examples looked pretty accurate to me. I showed my wife and she agrees. Many of her girl friends behave exactly like these "she says" examples. This is what I have been saying for years. Sex before marriage is very bad. Please learn from my mistake and hopefully kids don't have to suffer like I did. I had sex before the wedding at ROM and I was very late. It was so embarrassing that everyone was at the ROM waiting for me and soon to be wife. Better to save it for a few hours later on the wedding night after the dinner. For some Christians using condoms are a sin. I respect that too. Those things are evil and invented by the devil.
