Paddle shifts, tiptronic, steptronics and etc

Auto means auto. [laugh] Leave it at auto most of the time. You only override if situations require, e.g. downslope driving, entering a sharp bend, etc.

Actually, I find manual shifting for auto very difficult unlike real manual. Real manual, don't need to look at what you're doing. Auto, if no flappers, need to glance sideway and sometimes slot wrongly. Very non-intuitive, very troublesome.

Cars aren't that delicate. As long as you use the "manual shifting" as it's meant to be used, and maintain the car well, changing ATF as stipulated in the owner's manual, it should be fine. Of course, if you use the manual mode to redline every gear all the time or downshift at a high speed without first braking to drop both vehicle speed and engine RPM sufficiently, you're asking for trouble and your gearbox won't last.

Agree. Worse still is the fact that the shift patterns for downshift and upshift can be different in different cars. If one is used to another car and isn't careful enough, one might accidentally downshift instead of upshift. That's why for me, especially in Singapore usage, I prefer to leave it in D all the time.

using paddles daily. no issues so far. quite like shifting myself, even though i know the computer can do a better and more efficient job ... haha

Without the clutch, how do you control the car between cruising and coming to a full stop at the lights?

This is the most unnatural part to me

coming to a stop the car will program itself to down shift and engages 1 when stationary.

its fool proof...

I do not think so it will lead to early failure. You think you are in control but the manual override shifts are still restricted by the computer to prevent you from redlining the engine and stressing out the gb.

Anyway the manual override shifts have very game console feel to it...numb and detached. It's unlike those sports single clutch gb that gives you the shiok "kick" in the back everything you shift up or down.

Just leave the gb to shift itself.

No, not only dsg gb. Conventional auto is also the same. It's all in the programming that manages the gb. You can try to hold a gear and redline to 7K or more rpm it will most likely auto shift up at around 6K rpm. Likewise for shifting down. If shifting down will bring the engine to above 6K rpm the ecu will prevent you from shifting down.

Just brake to a full stop. It will auto downshift. [drivingcar]

yup this. or can always engine brake when the speed is low enough (drop from gear 2 to 1 once the car is moving at less than 40km/h to avoid redline). otherwise, just braking will automatically drop to 1st gear after going below 6km/h (and the switch is quite smooth since its a dual clutch GB)

After awhile i got lazy with the paddles and seldom use them liao. [laugh]

Only sometimes use during traffic jams to prevent it from auto upshift to gear 3.
