Sluggish car

Hi all,

 

Just wish to check if any one else driving a manual car also experience this:

 

Does your car's acceleration become sluggish after getting stuck in a traffic jam or when parked with engine running? There is no issue when the traffic is smooth though. What could be the problem? Thanks.

depends on what car you are driving, if driving like Sunny, Vios, Lancer, Avante, Rio, Optra... budget cars, and you pity to floor throttle, definitely Sluggish,

Huh? If your car is parked or hardly moving how do you know it's sluggish?? Or do you mean your car is less responsive to your inputs?

 

I only see problem if the car's check engine light is on. If not dan it could be many issues. Carbon build up is always an issue for cars that has accumulated a lot of mileage. It makes the car feel unresponsive if that's what you are saying.

I do feel on my E60 too, i am monitoring my air intake temp and water temp via OBD smart phone adaptor during heavy jam.

 

My water temp and intake temp was real high on that time. When clear from jam, after drive 1-2 minutes , it will be smooth back as usual.

 

Highlight to some workshop , they only told me it was normal on some car.

 

My synthom was when first moment when clear from jam, it was not feeling like move out, rpm rise up slower than smooth traffic.

actually Sluggish or responesive is quite subjective, if you felt it's obviously Sluggish than before, should be engine going to do service, change oil and filter, check air intake filter, check spark plugs, fine tune ECU etc,

english no good, maybe i should clarify. it happens when:

 

1. traffic jam or when traffic is slow. Gear 1 also not accelerating normally

2. i go pick up my wife from her work place. stopped for a few minutes with engine running, then move off. also not not able to accelerate normally

What lub oil grade are you using?

 

Also did you over fill your Lub. Oil for Euro R, it should be 4.5 ltr if I remember correctly.

Your air intake is probably warming up while you are sitting in traffic on a hot day. It makes the air less dense and hence makes less power.

I use Mobil 1 Gold 0w40. Nope I don't overfill and I service my car regularly. Fully stock.

Yup I know. I did cover NA in my statement. I have never driven a euro r accord but have driven the jdm one and civic they are generally very smooth. As mentioned above it may the air intake which could be making it seem sluggish.

I think it's the heat that is eating your power....1 degree up = 3 bhp lost

 

few ways u can do it...

 

1. Tuning to adjust your air/fuel ratio

2. Change to a lighten flywheel...the lighter it is, the easier to throttle...

3. Change car....(ok, I know this one quite nonsense)

 

Driving in hot weather will always make your drive sxxk due to thermal expansion....that's why engine oil/ oil cooler/ coolant is very essential to keep all in cool environment....especially during tracking....why need to open engine bonnet after few rounds on track.....All is HOT, so need to chill off else also getting difficult to move...

It sounds like a cooling issue. During traffic jam, your car is not getting cool well enough. When the engine become heat soaked, the ECU will detune the engine to cool it down. Hence you will feel that the car is sluggish. This is a safety feature built into most modern day car if I am not wrong.

 

That said, if this never happens before in similar jam scenario, then you should get the workshop to check the following:

 

Radiator and Aircon fan. Get them to check that both the fan is turning fast enough, and not just check if the fan is moving. Prior to fan motor failure, the fan could still move but just slow. (There should also be a high and low fan setting, depends on water temp, default by the car's ecu. Do check both, or rather if the high speed can be engage)

 

I wouldnt think its radiator (insufficient cooling) and engine oil (engine mostly idle during jam, despite the high heat there is not much engine load) as all issue is said to be resolve the moment you start moving.

 

Note: Just my thought. Not an expert's opinion.
