problem couple take on the poor taxi driver  [shakehead]

Man jailed for brutal assault on taxi driver
Ronald Loh
The New Paper Thursday, Sep 22, 2016

She had an argument with the taxi driver and tried to leave without paying.

The cabby, however, managed to grab hold of her handbag before she exited the vehicle.

She returned a while later with her fiance, who then bashed up the cabby and left him with multiple injuries, including a fracture to his right eye socket.

Yesterday, Desmond Poh Jia Jun, 25, who worked as a DJ at a club, was jailed 10 months for one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the cabby, Mr Richard Long, 51. Two other charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Court papers said Poh and his fiancee, Ms Liza Tay, were having supper at a coffee shop on Jalan Besar Road at about 4am on May 3 last year. The couple argued before Ms Tay stormed off and got into a cab driven by Mr Long.

She initially directed him towards Clementi but changed her mind during the journey and told him to return to the coffee shop.

Mr Long then made a wrong turn, prompting Ms Tay to shout at him. She said she had a right not to pay the fare.

On her request, Mr Long stopped the taxi at the junction of Syed Alwi Road and Townsend Road, and Ms Tay alighted without paying.

But Mr Long grabbed hold of her handbag, insisted she pay for her fare and said he would wait for her inside the taxi until she came back. He called the police.

Ms Tay soon returned with Poh, who then repeatedly punched Mr Long's face. Poh's friend, Toh Meng Kang, 27, also used a broom to hit Mr Long's shoulder.

Mr Long was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and treated for a host of injuries. He was given four days' hospitalisation leave.

Poh was arrested later that day and released on bail, but got himself into more trouble when he punched another man near St James Power Station in January this year.

Yesterday, his lawyer, Mr Thangavelu, said in mitigation Ms Tay had gone to Poh claiming the taxi driver had stolen her handbag and had molested her. He added Poh lost his presence of mind when he confronted the taxi driver.

But Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Daphne Lim pointed out there was no police report lodged by Ms Tay against Mr Long about the alleged molest. She said that Poh thuggishly and brutally assaulted the taxi driver without giving him the chance to explain.

sad sad case for the parents   [smallcry]

Today then I read this. While I have to agree the parents would be sad, I believe they have to share part of the blame for this tragedy. Sibling bullying doesn't happen overnight. It must have gone on for a very long time to reach that stage, possibly since young. If the parents did not recognize something like this and nip it before it went overboard, they are very much at fault for allowing it to keep happening. The parents also failed to see that their younger son was suffering that he had to go to IMH to seek treatment. While I am not in their shoes to criticize them, I hope people would take more care in seeing their children's emotional state. Perhaps the children are all adult and it was hard to get through to them.

My elder son always bully his brother too. My wife and I will stop it right there and then and tell him his actions were unnecessary. He realizes the issue and would stop... until the next time where we stop him again.

agree, but some time parents see the fighting as part of bonding  [sweatdrop]  and the bullying will stop when they turn adult in this case both above 20.

However, such bullying behavior can be in different form, psychologically one party feel stress in the dealing with the sibling and read too much into their words, the person who say it may want to feel in command or superior but the listener felt bullied.  Even grown up middle age adults can feel that way.

SINGAPORE — A man and a woman have been arrested for allegedly misusing boarding passes to purchase an Apple iPhone 7 at Changi Airport’s transit area last week, said the police in a Facebook post on Thursday (Sept 22).

Preliminary investigations revealed that both suspects had no intention to depart Singapore. Investigations against the duo are ongoing.

The transit areas of Changi Airport are gazetted as Protected Places and all passengers who enter the transit hall with a boarding pass should only be there for the purpose of travelling to their next destinations, said the police. Those who abuse their boarding pass to enter the transit areas, with no intention to proceed to their next destination, are liable for an offence under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act.

Since January, 15 people have been arrested in connection to offences under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act.

The offender may be prosecuted in court and may be fined S$1,000 and/or jailed two years.
