What do u think of keeping yr Optra for another 10 years?

Im considering renewing my Optra Estate COE if the price is right. [thumbsup]

Im happy with the space, relaibility, FC, Avalibility of cheap spares, handling etc. [nod]

Now its already 8 years old n I see no problem it lasting another 10 years or more. [thumbsup]

Car is solid, well built n easy to maintain. Just as good if not better than a jap car or Altis even. Only maybe Altis slightly bigger inside.

I am also considering the same to my 8 yrs old car. But PQP also means loosing the PARF, couples with high COE can be very expensive. Assuming a PARF of ~8k for normal 1.6L car, COE of ~65k for Cat A, add a total of ~3k for higher road tax for the next 10 yrs, that alone is already 76k. You definitely want to reserve another, say 5k for wear and tear and another 5k for misc repair. This already totalled to 86k not to mention old car are generally less fuel efficient compared to new one, so maybe $50 more petrol every month giving a 6k more petrol in 10 years. so there... 92k already.. top a bit more i think 100k can get new or close to new car already...

And I haven't even start with mine... CAT B, 2.3L, PARF 21k+...easily > 110k if I PQP it... I really [sweatdrop]

Boss, I'm also considering to renew my Optra. But still got 4 years left, God knows what will happen in 4 years, maybe COE will hit >$100k. I meant nobody could anticipated COE to reach $60k mark during '08/09 period. As of now, I had replaced parts like power window motor & regulator , aircon cooling coil, compressor and other wear N torn parts. I only fear is the gear box can last since it's a auto car. The engine, I quite confident that it can last another 14yrs. But still, not sure if GM will still produce the spare parts during the next 14yrs. Edited by Optramagnum

Likewise I'm considering to renew my vios when it expires in 2 yrs time. Reason being I'm familiar wif it's wear and tear conditions. Another used car is like jumping into the unknown

TS: I'll go for the lancer. Sunny always hear the fc sucks...

As for spares, I think it should be enough to last u until u decide to scrap.

But honestly if u can, top up abit for altis or Latio. Or if u lucky can get the hipporolla

@TS

I choose lancer for your criteria, though I didn't like CVT. Lancer is slightly more spacious. Sunny is very cramp behind, I used to own one.

The rest are on par I think.

Sunny seems to be quite a durable and reliable car as compared to Lancer. Only no good about Sunny is FC no good and rear seat a bit cramp. As for Lancer, interior seems to be bigger but Lancer is using CVT, some people might don't like it.

Since PQP is aleady $60k over... might as well consider the Altis. Though the PARF is a bit higher i.e 3k approx but it is definitely more reliable and longer-lasting than the Sunnys and the Lancers

my 1.5 cents

My dad use to own a 1.6M CS3, to me the aircon is strong and i feel that its better than the current ride. So if TS is looking for a ride with a powerful aircon, i would suggest to get the cs3, the looks is much better than the sunny. As one of the bro mentioned earlier, why not considered a manual lancer?

Not sure abt the CS3, but the Sunny is Climatic control A/C. Never had a problem with A/C at all on my Sunny.

Looks like among the jap brand B&B cars, altis still consider the best?!

I would think so too.....

Pay a bit more but the Altis can last...spares are cheap, gd fuel consumption, gd aircond

N gearbox......

No regrets

One thing for sure based on this thread. You wont make a wrong choice with either :) So just look out for a good deal and keep the gem!

Think is that my arf is ~6k. Thought use that to swee swee offset a similar sushi with original 12k omv. Then I standby a few K as contingency.

Though Altis is proven, but old car bound to need a GB rebuild at some point. And of course Tyt being a Tyt, seller sure capitalize & quote high high. For Sunny, I may have the upper hand in negotiating..haha. As for Cs3, seller will say...old but still stylo....i will say but engine date back to 1990s, sohc....blah blah.....tug of war... lol..

I appreciate all the great feedback. :)

not to brag, but latio is a very nice car... until today, my 7.5yrs old with ~190K clocked, the engine noise is still very low, not coarse... sometimes, when i switch off radio with car in parking mode, i forgot my engine started already... [grin]

I think most modern cars are like that la. The noise only comes in when moving. My 7+ year old car also can't hear engine running when I idle with radio off. Only those that never maintain properly then the engine will be noisy. Like those subarus and lancers. For some reason their exhaust always damaged and exhaust very loud. Like my old corona with a hole in the exhaust.

You mean drive a 9 year old car ? Won't that be risky too cos a car of that age usually would have very old parts and chances of replace/repair of those parts could be higher....?

Not really. If the car is in good shape nothing to worry about. Even when the car is scrapped, the car would probably have a lot of life left in it. Such cars are relatively cheap because people have this view that such cars are risky buys. Best to buy at 2-3k above paper value. If the car starts to give you problems, you don't lose much if you scrap. Depreciation for such cars is 5-7k per year which seems fair if you ask me.

Why don't consider latio? The ride is comfortable, spate parts are cheap, rear leg room is good but with 2 child seat, center would be a bit cramp (anyway, which b&b of this class not?).. Even until today, I find the ride is nice sometimes when I'm all alone cruising on expressway... Also thinking of renewing or... Btw, mine is 4at, not cvt.... I will stay away from cvt as long as I could....

Yes. I heard the CVT is very problematic. [thumbsdown]

Latio is also a nice car for daily driving. [drivingcar][thumbsup]
