Achtung 6th Gear March 31, 2015 Share March 31, 2015 the car would squad lol Usually a 6-4 front rear would b egood. Not everyone has the good sense to upgrade their brakes before they upgrade their car's power. Just look at the amount of cars running upgraded front big brake kits, without doing anything with the rear. ↡ Advertisement
Hydrocarbon Turbocharged March 31, 2015 Share March 31, 2015 Because all too often - the rest of the car is not set up to handle the additional power - With everything from brakes, suspension, transmission, cooling system, not to mention the space behind the wheel. If the turbo upgrade is done as part of a comprehensive range of performance mods that's a bit difference - but then, generally speaking you are depending on the skill of the installation to make sure that everything works well together. When it comes from the manufacturer / installed in the factory a far greater level of testing has been done. Honestly -- as much as I think the LTA is too draconian, I cannot support the idea of simply "lup turbo" for more performance - mostly it is not a very good idea. It depends on how much power is added (size of turbo, fuel injector changed, ecu remapped, etc).. Of course, when one component is changed, it affects the other components too, but it doesn't mean that all the chassis of the cars can only withstand the exact power ratings that they have been given. Which was why I called for it to be done by certified workshops (without the need of going through approval by LTA, etc). Then again, with 130bhp being the defining factor of whether a car falls into CAT A COE or not, I guess, there's a huge disincentive for something like this to happen. Actually I think their reason is because not all cars are designed to handle this kind of power. Anyway I did think of that before and from what I read, it seems like adding turbo is legal if you can get the car manufacturer to certify that the turbo you want to add is suitable for the car and the emissions can still pass their test after the modification. Heard from the workshop I go to that some people did manage to get turbo for their vios cuz toyota did have a turbo vios in the past. You can add a turbo (IIRC, from what I read from LTA website), but you need to give them engineering drawings and other technical details, along with what you mention, manufacturer certification. Ah well, it's just a personal opinion. I'm by no means an engineering or car expert. I just love some cars.

BMS did install a small turbo for their show-car but it was unfortunately, not street legal.
Nzy Twincharged March 31, 2015 Share March 31, 2015 (edited) Actually those that install turbo don't really irritate much. Its those people with spoilt headlamps where the lights are too bright and not adjusted properly or those who never maintain their car and exhaust got hole. Make their exhaust so loud. There is this guy who always comes to my neighborhood to fetch his gf and his lancer in so bad condition but he doesn't do anything about it. The exhaust is so loud and irritating like those old cars with a hole in the exhaust plus his suspension already collapsed so he can't even go over humps without scraping but he still don't fix it. LTA should be catching these sort of people. Edited March 31, 2015 by Nzy

Nzy Twincharged March 31, 2015 Share March 31, 2015 The lancer doesn't happen to be white is it? Nope. Yellow one. The older lancer which I think is glx. Got money to paint the car but no money to fix his exhaust or suspension. But recently I think these kind of "half-dead" cars are getting more common. See so many civics and subarus also having the same exhaust problem. Actually I am guilty of it also cuz my old car had a hole in the exhaust so it is quite loud even when idling but didn't fix it cuz COE left a few months only. But these cars I see recently are the newer ones like SG or SJ plates. Not going to scrap so soon what. Got money to change their rims and paint their cars but no money to fix the exhaust and suspension problems.
Mercury1 Turbocharged March 31, 2015 Share March 31, 2015 Ahh ok, I know a guy at work with a white one very very low suspension but no exhaust issues. Have to put up with it man, although I am surprise those cars can pass the inspection. Nope. Yellow one. The older lancer which I think is glx. 1fast1 Supersonic April 1, 2015 Share April 1, 2015 Then again, with 130bhp being the defining factor of whether a car falls into CAT A COE or not I'm sure I've said this before, but it bears repeating: this is the most massively stupid thing the gahmen has done to date regarding vehicular taxation. There is no logical rationale for linking power output to tax category. Even engine capacity could be justified to some extent (though I have argued that greatest exterior length or curb weight is a much better indicator of road-space taken, and in any case, there is double or triple taxation when you take into account recurring road taxes and petrol taxes). But linking HP to COE categories - that's just plain retarded.
Jayy25 6th Gear April 1, 2015 Share April 1, 2015 Me too. I think LTA bikes pang gang at 5pm. Daytime always can see LTA bikes catching modded cars. But at night where most drivers turn on their bright headlights, I have never seen any LTA bikes at night, Have you guys? wrong...LTA do work in the evenings till 10pm at night on weekdays and weekends. PH also got. I myself got caught on a sunday night at 8.30pm by 2 LTA bikes (they usually work in pairs during night time or weekends) I also witnessed LTA stopping cars on CNY eve (right after midnight, bet 1-4 am) for 2 CNYs back to back....

Recently 1.0 engine can hit 100bhp. Next time, all cars will be cat B.
