Double disasters taint Malaysia Airlines
Hit by double disasters, Malaysia Airlines may become tainted for travelers, never recover
By Stephen Wright and Kelvin Chan, AP Business Writers | Associated Press – 20 minutes ago
HONG KONG (AP) -- Hit by two astonishing tragedies in quick succession, the Malaysia Airlines brand may become the
airline industry's equivalent of asbestos or News of the World: toxic to the public and, experts say, impossible to redeem.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was downed over eastern Ukraine on Thursday with 298 people aboard by what American
intelligence authorities believe was a surface-to-air missile. Just four months earlier, a Malaysia Airlines jetliner carrying
239 people disappeared about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur. The jet has still not been found, a source of
profound unease for travelers and the aviation industry.
"I can't comprehend of anything they can do to save themselves," said Mohshin Aziz, an aviation analyst at Maybank in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
"Perception-wise it really hits home," Aziz said. "It's very difficult to fight against negative perception."
Even before the Flight 370 mystery, state-owned Malaysia Airlines was in serious financial trouble. In an industry infamous
for impoverishing shareholders and irking customers, Malaysia Airlines had long stood out for its years of restructurings
and losses.
The Flight 370 disaster along with the often erratic response of Malaysia Airlines and the Malaysian government deeply
scarred the carrier. Now, the once proud national airline is facing the unthinkable again.
University student Dayne Rodgers, waiting for a flight to Brisbane, Australia at Incheon International Airport in South
Korea, said even very cheap fares might not convince him to fly with Malaysia Airlines."I don't know if my Mum would let me," he said.
Already losing about $1.6 million a day, there will be "no miracles" for Malaysia Airlines, said Aziz, the Maybank analyst.
Before the Ukrainian disaster, his opinion was the airline didn't have the capacity to survive beyond a year.
The airline's share price plummeted 11 percent Friday. Ukraine has accused pro-Russian separatists of shooting down the
plane flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The rebels denied it.
Unlike Flight 370, the responsibility for which is pinned with Malaysia Airlines, the second disaster appears largely beyond
the airline's control. It may, however, face questions about why it continued with flight paths over eastern Ukraine, which is
the heart of a violent rebellion against Kiev, when some airlines were circumventing the country.
For air travelers in Asia, who have a multitude of options thanks to a budget airline boom, the latest incident will make the
Malaysian carrier even less attractive. Its brand in the rest of the world, where it became known largely because of the
Flight 370 mystery, is now even more closely associated with the worst fears of fliers.
Josh Gokul, a 25-year-old Australian student on a layover at Incheon, said he had flown with Malaysian Airlines before and
its service was "fantastic." But he is now "very hesistant" about using the airline. "Flying is scary enough."
Within Malaysia, the shock is palpably raw. "I was stunned," said 48-year-old shopkeeper Reezal Mohamed. "It's unbelievable."
Malaysia Airlines has been in the red for the last three years. Last year, its losses ballooned to 1.17 billion ringgit ($363
million), nearly three times larger than its 433 million ringgit loss in 2012.
As a state-owned flag carrier, it is required to fly unprofitable domestic routes, and its strong union has resisted operational
changes. Nimbler discount rivals such as Air Asia have expanded rapidly, while Malaysia Airlines has been like a
supertanker, slow to change direction.
For some travelers, the airline's poor financial health is more concerning for the future than the two disasters.
"Last time I saw them, the plane was almost empty and so I suspect, probably losing a lot of money," said tourist Ricky
Leong as he checked in for a Malaysia Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur. "They're not going to maintain
their fleet and there's going to be issues in the future."
After the disappearance of Flight 370, the biggest backlash emanated from China because its nationals were the majority of
passengers on the flight. Hopes for a recovery in that crucial market might now be set back.
Tongcheng Network Technology, which operates the Chinese ticket booking website ly.com, suspended all flight ticketing
and hotel bookings involving Malaysia Airlines after Flight 370 vanished.
"Now there's this plane crash, we would be very unlikely to consider resuming it in the future," said the manager of its
public relations department, who only gave her surname, Zhang.
Seth Kaplan, managing partner of industry newsletter Airline Weekly, said Malaysia Airlines was in "worse shape"
financially that almost any other airline before Flight 370 vanished.
"It's just hard to imagine that they could have even survived the first incident," he said.

Cmon laa... We are not from the industry and thus in no position to judge what is ridiculous or not. Given that MAS already strike one liao, you think they won't be careful? SQ flight is 15 minutes away and on the same route. So you think SQ is careless too?

I find the body of the lady in the pix intact and skin still smooth smooth hard to believe also.

i think the airspace wasnt closed yet. it was just "up to pilots" to take it. but was adviced against

It will be hard to operate MH as it is now. Brand perception all down the drain.

not the whole plane on fire when it was hit right? so when the plane break into pieces, the passenger belted to the seat will be falling all over in the sky right?

i was just imaging cos never see one before [laugh][laugh]

Yes eyewitnesses saw the people falling to the ground. At first they thought it was rags or something but then realised it was actually people.

I guess it kinda looked like the jumpers from the twin towers during 9/11.

Hmm.... the is a great disparity in height but I guess the landing is all the same. But look at the passports, they looked liked they just came out from someone's drawer. Seems like part of the plane landed quite 'softly'. Very odd considering everything started free falling from 33k Ft. [:(]

"all these signs point in an exceptionally ominous direction for Moscow. Rebels, whom they have aided, abetted, and armed for months appear to have perpetrated a mass casualty attack just as the US is tightening sanctions against Russia for its role in destabilising Ukraine."

Putin has to answer as to how pro-russian rebels have gotten their hands on a buk launcher... some more now got intercepted audio evidence

BTW russia isnt just encouraging violence in ukraine, its well known to supply arms etc to bashar al assad's army in syria... putin is like trying to stir WW3 or something

from CNA: World AIDS community mourns colleagues on crashed Malaysian plane

MELBOURNE: The world AIDS community on Friday mourned several passengers on a crashed Malaysian Airlines plane who were heading to Australia for a global conference on the epidemic.

Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, which US officials believe was hit by a surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people on board, was due to connect with another flight to Melbourne.

UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe said his thoughts and prayers are with the families of those tragically lost on flight.

Held every two years, the International AIDS Conference which is scheduled to start on Sunday is a forum for campaigners to highlight developments in fighting the disease and discuss financing problems.

The conference this year was also expected to channel anger about laws in Africa that stigmatise homosexuality and in the former Soviet Union that punish intravenous drug users -- a crackdown now extended to Russian-annexed Crimea.

Some 12,000 participants are due to take part, joined by former US president Bill Clinton and rock singer and poverty activist Bob Geldof.

Leading AIDS researcher and former International AIDS Society president Joep Lange is thought to have been on the flight that went down in strife-torn eastern Ukraine.

It is unclear who fired the weapon although Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it appeared to have been Russian separatists.

Australia's National AIDS Trust paid tribute to Dutchman Lange, who has been involved in HIV research and treatment since 1983.

"Reports Joep Lange died in Malaysian plane crash today, with other scientists on way to @AIDS_conference. Desperately sad news," it said on Twitter.

US doctor Seema Yasmin described Lange on social media as "a kind man and a true humanitarian".

"How do we measure how much a person has done for humanity? People like Joep change the course of humanity," she said.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) confirmed in a statement that "a number of our colleagues and friends" en route to the conference were on Flight MH17.

"At this incredibly sad and sensitive time, the IAS stands with our international family and sends condolences to the loved ones of those who have been lost to this tragedy," it said.

Of the 298 on-board the plane, 154 were Dutch nationals. There also were 43 Malaysians and 27 Australians, as well as passengers from Indonesia, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Britain and Canada.

London-based AIDS campaigner Mark Gettleson said some of those on the flight were from the STOPAIDSNOW group, which works to offer care and treatment to those affected by HIV and AIDS, and support prevention initiatives.

"Several on flight were activists en route to conference in Melbourne, fighting to save lives. Tragic," he tweeted.

The flight took off from Schiphol airport in Amsterdam shortly after noon on Thursday and was supposed to land in Kuala Lumpur early Friday. A scheduled connection to Melbourne was due to arrive on Friday evening.

Some 35 million people live with HIV although global AIDS-related deaths and new infections have fallen by over a third in a decade, raising hopes of beating the killer disease by 2030, the United Nations said Wednesday.

Many airlines have already avoided flying over this corridor. Some rerouted months ago. SQ did not. If the shooter first take a smoke break then start aiming..... It could have been them. MH17 just sway. They too however decided to maintain this route cos it is more expensive to take a longer route and MAS is in a shitty financial position.

SQ? They have gone down in my estimation. Premium price but not premium safety considerations taken as far as I am concerned. If itz Jetstar then I got nothing to say. Just my opinion.
