Somehow I feel this tragedy can be avoided if the plane had chosen an alternative route.

RIP... history seems to always repeat itself

30 years ago, Korean commercial plane KAL007 was shot down by the Soviet Union... all 269 passengers died

USSR never officially admitted or apologized for the tragedy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007

The Soviet Union initially denied knowledge of the incident,[2] but later admitted the shootdown, claiming that the aircraft was on a spy mission.[3] The Politburo said it was a deliberate provocation by the United States[4] to test the Soviet Union's military preparedness, or even to provoke a war. The White House accused the Soviet Union of obstructing search and rescue operations.[5] The Soviet military suppressed evidence sought by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) investigation, notably the flight data recorders,[6] which were eventually released eight years later after the collapse of the Soviet Union.[7]

Its not the first time Russia has directly or indirectly shot down a civilan plane.

They also shot down KAL 007 in 1983.

US has a history of building planes and Russia has a history of shooting them down.

:D

Yeah I remember the Korean flight. It was a tragedy. [:(]

I think it's a major c0ckup. The airspace should be declared a no-fly zone once the conflict started. The international civilian aviation is sleeping.

I will pin part of the blame on the person who approved the flight in MAS as well.

Knowing the flight path is going thru a war zone, he still approved the flight!

Seeing the wreckage on TV is so painful

Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 crashed over the Black Sea on 4 October 2001, en route from Tel Aviv,Israel to Novosibirsk, Russia. The plane, a Soviet-made Tupolev Tu-154, carried an estimated 66 passengers and 12 crew members. Most of the passengers were Israelis visiting relatives in Russia. No one on board survived. The crash site is some 190 km west-southwest of the Black Sea resort ofSochi and 140 km north of the Turkish coastal town of Fatsa and 350 km east-southeast of Feodosiya,Ukraine. Ukraine admitted that the disaster was probably caused by an errant missile fired by its armed forces.

Repeat mistake? Or intentional?

What I understand is that it's IATA approved corridor if flying above 33,000 ft.

So IATA should be blamed.

That whole area should be banned for commercial flight, no matter the flying height.

Doubt the rebels could handle such sophisticated equipments. There's also another news where they mentioned the Ukrainian armed forces sending SAM to that region .

Likely the same case as this. But they're trying to claim that it's not their fault.

To the victims, I pray Death was instant with minimum suffering.

To their families, I pray they find out the Truth and muster the Courage to continue Living after seeing the wreckage.

European airlines are now scrambling to reroute flights.

SQ was in that area when MH17 was taken down.

You'd wonder if SIA is planning to re-route flights too.

I guess if MH17 didn't happen, it'd still be a disaster waiting to happen, while every airline just pass by casually.

No kidding, Captain Obvious

Yes. It was obvious. But what's also obvious was the place is in war. Warnings were issued to avoid the area. So... ya... it was obvious.

Some pro did it...

...concludes then that if the plane really was shot down, a professional military force -- either on purpose or by accident -- was responsible. "This is not the kind of weapon a couple of guys are going to pull out of a garage and fire," he said.

It's a tragedy waiting to happen. Could very well have been SIA or any other airlines flying past the area.

A spokesman told Voice of Russia radio at the time: "The forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic assumed control of A-1402 [regiment's] military base" and boasted of capturing the Buk launcher.

Well, the separatist capture a military base and could be eager to test it out on the next plane flying in "their" airspace
