My wish for 50th Singapore birthday is

ALL Ministers only draw $50k salary per month.

So basic package will not exceed $600k.

For the next 50 months!

$5 meal nowadays don't fill my stomach because so little.

Depends on where you eat also..

This might be unpopular, especially in MCF, but I do agree with the first two points ($5 meal and $500 holidays).. $5 is enough to eat a full meal in most parts of Singapore (even as a larger than normal guy, I feel this way), but not if one chooses restaurant or the more atas places.

Of course, there might be no air-cond, and might be stuffy, but if one is to look strictly at price, $5 is good enough for a filling meal. Economy rice / Mixed rice stall, order rice + add rice, one meat, two vege, usually price comes up to $3.30 or $3.80. Don't complain about drinks, because we can always choose to bring along a bottle of water.

And for the holidays, it's always a matter of choice..

Coming to the issue of housing, yeah, the prices seem to be stratospheric, and sizes are going down, but how much space do we really need to live? Since we like to compare to Japan (and maybe sometimes Taiwan or South Korea) for issues like public / private transportation and, why not compare housing to Japan too? A lot of young singles are living in small apartments about 200sqft - 300sqft or thereabouts, about half some of our shoebox apartment sizes.

Why can't we do it too? Especially if the prices are right? (I hate greedy developers as much as the next person, but if we're looking for the culprit, we need only look into the mirror. We've allowed the wrong people to rule over our housing and make up the bad policies.)

Ah well, then again, maybe this is just a groggy-just-woke-up kinda rant.. =D

$950k for a condo at ulu place not near mrt not freehold compare to this one does not mean really cheap. it is cheap for a reason. in terms of instrinc value, this one is higher.

452sqft for that kind of price? :o 900+k can get a 2 bdrm 700+sqft condo elsewhere...

Perhaps many forumers did not read and digest the article.

The writer is talking about $50k homes in south east asia. In a parallel way to other big advanced countries, seeing the whole of SEA as a country. Singaporeans can choose to live in the expensive city of Singapore or in the cheaper rural area somewhere else in SEA.

this guys has been quite outspoekn recently... which p8p GRC is he gona b inserted into next erections?

He too old (66 yo), and too high-ranking (former Permanent Secretary), meaning they can't make him any less than a Minister. One example is Heng Swee Keat, who was already Senior Permanent Secretary when he left the civil service. Make him anything less than a Minister and it would have been a demotion.

I think ah, Kishore just trying to get attention to sell more books la. He already mentioned his next book in this month's article, called The Most Blessed Corner of the World.

$5 meals, $500 holidays and $50k homes for SG50

Our columnist continues his monthly series of Big Ideas for the nation: Be happy for a year, when Singapore turns 50 next August. Celebrate Singapore's success - because there's practically zero chance of repeating that success in future.

...

To understand how well-off we are, just read the following aspirations of Indians after they elected Mr Narendra Modi as their Prime Minister. Mr M. J. Akbar, a well-known journalist, asks his fellow Indians: "Why cannot we have a simple home with a toilet for every Indian family by 2022? Broadband in every village? Electricity around the clock? A clean country, rid of garbage and filth that poisons life and nature, by 2019, as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary? These are not luxuries in the 21st century: they are bare necessities."

We have achieved everything on his list and achieved it long ago.

As usual, why always compare with these 3rd world nations?? No wonder we never progress...

Want to make meaningful comparison, they should compare with scandinavian countries, or switzerland - which I thought used to be our benchmark???

$50k house? Stop dreaming, you are raiding national reserve!

$5 meal? Possible, take bus and drop by Ngee Ann Poly's Munch canteen for a decent lunch or dinner.

Btw, in the true spirit of public service, ministers should be drawing $50k a year, not $50k a month as suggested by someone.
