Some suggestions to help you in your 'lucky dip' :

- Strafford Upon Avon- Shakespeare & Anne Hathaway Houses

- Upper & Lower Slaughter

- Gloucester - Cheese rolling festival from Cooper's Hill :()

- Bristol - Clifton Suspension Bridge where the world's first bungee jump was done

- Bath

- Cheddar Gorge

- Glastonbury - Music festival just over but worth a trip just to walk up the hillock.

- Stonehenge

- Shaftesbury - historic market town

- coastal drive between Minehead & Lynton

- Plymouth - where the Mayflower set forth for the New World (USA) in 1620

- Lyme Regis - known for it's prehistoric stone & marine fossils. Also where the filming of 'French Lieutenant's Woman' was done.

Above were just some of the places I enjoyed exploring during my stint in UK during long weekends while based in Bristol.

Enjoy your planning & drive!

Wow.. Cant do all man.. I will visit some of them.. Thank you very much. :)

Plymouth beside Mayflower.. What can i see?

Generally UK roads are pretty safe, leave whatever bad driving habits back in Singapore and remember to be patient, keep a safe distance and signal your intentions early. People there are less tolerant about bad driving habits and some of them (eg, the Police) will not hesitate to confront you.

One more thing you need to take note is the fuel cost, it can cost between SGD 2.80 to SGD 3.20 for a litre of regular petrol, premium

petrol (like V Power) will cost more. Prepare to pay more as things can be more expensive than Singapore.

Thank you. I have good driving habits here. Cheers.

Drive with care. Don't speed. Enjoy your trip! :D

Yup...gonna take it easy and go slow.. safety 1st. cheers

Plymouth - trading seaport during the Roman Times, survived WWll Blitz, present Royal Naval Sub base, ferry service to France & Spain.......

You may drive thru it if it is on your route back to London.

Btw, it is very useful to throw a rug/towel/mat into the car for impromptu picnics when driving in UK, esp the Southwest Counties. It's common to see people relaxing on the grass, both in cities & countryside, & it's a nice way to rest in between drives.

My time there: stocked car with drinks, canned fish/meat/pâté, bread, biscuit, fruits, etc.....and had all my lunches/tea outdoors rather than some stuffy dark tavern or cafes. All these description make me want to go back there to relive those past Summers :)

Back in one piece of my solo drive. The numbers of round about is spinning me round and round.

1st light from Lands' End

Could you share some of your visits to places of interest, the routes, etc......?

I have a working trip to Manchester early next year; wondering what I could do around that region on free days. More familiar with counties in the southwest.

Greetings from UK!

Arrived @ Manchester after 15hrs flight via Munich ( confined on plane for an hr, while team of German cleaners clean & tidied the plane, rearranging blankets, cushions, etc... with same pair of dirty gloves! ). Yuks!

Noticed some cautious Asian travelers had donned surgical masks throughout the journey.

Though there's heightened awareness of the Ebola threat, I don't see or encountered any checks at Changi or Manchester Airports.

Thks.

Of course must drive while in UK. Picked up rental at the airport. Booked Ford Focus but given a Seat Leon Diesel instead.

Drove 200+ miles southwards on first day to Bourton On Water in the Cotswolds.

Didn't see this thread when first posted.

Some good suggestions above but also some blah.

I don't understand the 'don't bother with Stonehenge' comment.

I know different strokes etc etc but a 5000 year old monument with many of the stones transported from a part of Wales 200km away! well just to stand and consider how it might have been done, how the stones were first found, why they were thought important enough to want them at Stonehenge, how they were quarried, how many people were involved in the transport 5000 years ago?

Mind boggling to me.

Only other comment would be for future travellers to UK, try Enterprize Car Hire. Good and much cheaper than Hertz or Avis.

I wonder how the TS found using walk in B & Bs. I suppose if it's just a bed for the night then OK but not that easy to find one with vacancies in the summer season.

Not only in Summer; where I visited last week & now @ Lake District, the signs 'No Vacancies' posted almost everywhere.

I guess different people have diff expectations of the kind of places they want to visit.
