Nah............SQ transit Munich. It seemed they overbooked biz class, so upgraded me to 1st class.

So, overall, a very pleasurable trip indeed. :)

Nice! Me no luck for upgrade. But may use my mileage for a st class to Brazil. hehehehe.

I have never gotten a single upgrade from overpriced Sq in more than 10 years despite frequent flying... but got them from Emirates and quotas even as infrequent customer.

Am planning a 2 week trip to UK... catching a game at Liverpool and to see Scotland!

Phase 1 - Flying to London & driving up to Liverpool (2 nights) then Glasgow...probably spending two nights in Liverpool

Stopover some where between Bath and Birmingham....

Phase 2 - Clockwise loop : Glasgow - Isle of Skye - Inverness - Edinburgh

Plan A - Spend two nights each at Glasgow, Skye, Inverness and Edinburgh

Plan B - Spend one night at Glasgow then another night near Fort William before heading for Skye...spend a night there and find another hotel between skye and inverness before stopping for a night at Inverness... before heading to Edinburgh...

Phase 3 - Edinburgh - York - London (within 3 or 4 days)

Any comments from those familiar with Scotland?

Hi Raymondism, since you only want to catch a football game in Liverpool & then drive around Scotland, you could fly to and from Manchester. I did mine last Autumn with SQ via Munich.

The drive from London is waste of time if you don't plan to visit anywhere else enroute to Liverpool.

Or fly to Edinburgh via Amsterdam & swing down south for the football match. If you're an outdoorsy person, spend a couple of days drive thru Northern Wales.

Turbocharged

For some reason it is difficult for Singaporeans to appreciate UK countryside.

Maybe because nothing gigantic about it.

But we luv it.

Also I find Singaporeans want to go places not necessarily to enjoy that place but so they can come home and tell friends ,, we went to Paris, Rome, London etc etc whether they enjoyed it or not.

Their friends have no idea where Conway, or Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is and really no interest in it. Just my opinion.

Haha thats true.

Even when they have 0 interests in those famous places. Weird are my countrymen

My preliminary plan was to fly to London... visit Stone Henge then Bath and spend a night at Cotswold area. Will explore Cotswold area and probably spend the night ard Birmingham before stopping over at Chester and Liverpool.

Will consider your suggestion to fly to Edinburgh.

Any comments about my Scotland drive-around? Do you think 8 days is enough for Glasgow - Skye - Inverness - Edinburgh?

Your planned 8 days is enough to cover Scotland if you're there just for holiday. My 8 days there ........4 days cooped up indoors for working conference, which left me with 4 days for sightseeing.

Had a free day in between conferences...took a day drive up north along the coast to Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Fraserburgh & Pennan (quaint village where the movie 'Local Hero' was filmed).

From there, cut thru Cairngorms National Park via Bremar & back to Edinburgh. The Cairngorms were majestically awesome & remote. Was there in Spring....so, early sunset & it was getting dark & eerie when I drove thru.

Edinburgh : besides visiting the castle, there's the Royal Mile......shops, pubs, restaurants. This old part

Of the city is best explored on foot. Parking rates very expensive. The Balmoral hotel where I stayed ( corner of Princes St & North Bridge) didn't have any parking available. Had to park in nearby St James Shopping Mall. You will need at least 2 nights here.

Inverness : can stop by Stirling Castle for look see.....maybe just take photos fr a distance outside.

I night enough unless you wish to drive to Thurso.

Fort William : leisurely drive to this town along Loch Ness. Stop along the way to visit Urquhart Castle ruins. This is a town for hikers.....2 nights stay if u wish to hike up Ben Nevis.

Trying to jot my memory ........from Urquhart Castle, took A87 to Isle of Skye, did a whirlwind tour around the isle, managed to catch last ferry to Mallaig for drive to Fort William for the night.

Next day, drove to foot of Ben Nevis, spent an hour hiking up and down the mountain (very short stretch only), then drove thru Oban, short stop at Loch Lomond and then to Queensferry (very near airport) for the night to catch sunrise flight back.

Overall, a very rushed trip. Wish had more time to truly enjoy Scotland.....beautiful country; one of the few unspoilt places that I will gladly go back to again.

Add Loch Lomond and Trossachs region for a lovely scenic drive. Drop by Loch Fyne on the way for fresh oysters. 2 full days drive should be enough in the Trossachs National Park. This region is much more colorful in vegetation and scenery compared to the rugged beauty of the Highlands and Skye.

You do it either before or on way back to Glasgow from Skye via Mallaig.

Another recommendation is to take steam train to Mallaig from Glasgow on the west highland line. This is the train used in Harry Potter movies. The journey will take you past Fort William and Ben Nevis, across lovely countryside. This journey is is considered to be one of the most scenic journeys in the world.

Yup... might consider taking train from london to Liverpool to Glasgow or Edinburgh to cut down on travelling time if we decided not to sniff ard some parts of England

Since you going Liverpool, it's worth to spend a day at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlets, located off the M53, between Liverpool & Chester.
