Maid abuse: Couple face more charges

That's the part where the defence lawyer and prosecutor has to fight over.

Can these allegations be supported with evidents ?

Looking at the Asiaone 16-Dec report again, the article places majority of the ex-maid's testimony in 1st few paragraphs and none of it is about the major issue which is starvation  - which has been proven by medical specialists:

http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/no-phone-no-salary-no-outside-contact

They forbade her from talking to anyone, including other maids.

Her mobile phone was kept away from her, and she lost all contact with her family, including her three children, back home in the Philippines.

They also watched her every move - even when she took a shower, she was not left alone.

"They were always watching me, scolding me if I made mistakes.

"They're watching me when I wake up, what I eat, what I drink and when to take a shower," said Filipino maid Thelma Oyasan Gawidan.

Unable to take it any more, Madam Gawidan, now 40, eventually fled her employers' Orchard Road condominium on April 18 last year, 15 months after she started work.

i think is about controlling, whether self or other.

Her behavior seem to be consistent with the first maid. The not xiao people who abuse maid usually hit/beat them up.

That's the problem in her testimony so far - is it about the charge for inadequate food causing weight loss...

OR about how the Chongs manage their maid in general from $, phone access and human-right related accusations ?

Refering to same Asiaone report, Madam Gawidan did confirm she was "given $500 as an allowance" and was allowed to speak to officials from Phillippines embassy when they phone Chong's home. Another fact is  she had the chance to escape and even report to the police when she stayed with Chong's parent for 2 months in 2013. When asked why don't runaway ? The ex-maid's reply: "Even though I wanted (to), I'm scared as I didn't know where to go."

Yet, a few months after that, she was able to "fled" to the nearby Far East Shopping Centre and met another Pinoy who brought her to a migrant worker centre for help.

she probably won't go to jail with history of seeing a psychiatrist for more than 20 years. The hubby maybe, or maybe just end up with heavy fine.

Wonder how the Pinoy community would react if the above sentence given? Would they stage a protest outside the courts or worse flip car ? They might feel that one of their own people not treated fairly & may happen to them too.

Have to tread carefully on this, I would say.

I dont think her OCD medication can be bought over the counter. Need doctor's prescription to purchase.

Same for me too. I need to see the doctor to prescribe me my medication, cannot be bought over the counter in SG. It is the easier money the specialist earn from me. Consultation less than 5mins. Just ask how are you, prescribe medication and the most important - one day MC. [bounce2]:yeah-im-not-drunk:

No la. She is definitely seeing a shrink now to get her meds but it might be only because of this case. Prior to this, the last time she was with a shrink could have been 20 years ago? The report doesn't really state if she was seeing the doc 5-10-15 years ago.

To be honest it's between the employer and maid. I have hired foreign workers before, some can't even keep their pay safe. It's either they get swindled by their roommates or strangers or some silly reason they have lost their pay. Even want me to safeguard for them. I told them I'm not their mother. I told them to transfer most of their pay back home asap. Some of them still got that child like mentality. Dunno how to safe keep their money. Some cannot control their spending. A lot of pattern. If you happen to come across more of them you will see what's going on.

That's assuming the worker asks the employer to help safekeep the money - which doesn't seem to be the case here right?

Foreign worker or not, a boss can't unilaterally decide to withhold salary because they fear the worker might spend it unwisely.

Huh. Why should we have to tread carefully?

Stage protest then we send them home. Flip cars then we send them bullets.

Pinoy can be forgiving, sometimes.

The trouble is when they get emotional...and that's to tough part - they tend to be emotional and expressive people until facts and rational take the back seat.

Remember Flor Contemplacion case and Pinoy reaction to her execution ?

due to the fact i customised the shoe cabinets.

my helper, threw away the right side of my shoe along with the old cabinet (my own conclusion) when the workers clear the rubbish

so should i throw away the left or keep for a few week and see if she suddenly remembered where she pack the shoes?

just inform her the missing part will be replaced by claiming from her next pay day.. that might help in her recollection.   [:p]

Woman sentenced to nine months' jail for slapping, kicking and punching maid

SINGAPORE - After six months of abuse by her employer, an Indonesian maid escaped from the third-floor Punggol flat by climbing out from the service balcony window and leaping from the second floor, injuring herself.

Ms Yulianti, who was 33, when she did this on Aug 7, 2012, took a taxi to the maid agency to seek help, and was later taken to hospital for bruises on her head and body.

On Monday (Feb 22), her employer, former customer relationship officer Nuraini Hassan, 32, was sentenced to nine months' jail on four counts of maid abuse. Two other similar charges were taken into consideration.

She admitted to punching Ms Yulianti in the left eye, slapping her on the face and kicking her in the abdomen on July 24, 2012, at her home in Edgefield Plains.

On Aug 5, she scratched the domestic helper's face with her fingernails; punched her on the face the next day; and on the day she escaped, slapped her and kicked her in the stomach.

Nuraini's husband, Muhamad Al-Hafiz Nordin, 32, pleaded guilty to two maid abuse charges last year and has completed his four-week jail sentence.

A court heard Ms Yulianti started working for Nuraini in January 2012 and that during the first month of her employment, Nuraini treated her well. But after that she would scold the maid. From July she was also allowed to bathe only once every three days as Nuraini felt that she wasted too much water in washing clothes with the washing machine.

On July 23 at about 10pm, the maid ate some noodles prepared by her employer for her as she was hungry, not realising that it was meant for her to break fast. As she had eaten the noodles, Nuraini did not prepare any more food for her.

At about 5am the next day, Ms Yulianti was hungry and ate four slices of bread. When she told her employer at about noon and volunteered to pay for the bread, Nuraini lashed out angrily at her by punching, slapping and kicking her.

On Aug 5, Nuraini shouted at Ms Yulianti for not ironing her dress and scratched her face.

The next day, Nuraini scolded the maid and punched her in the face several times - all because her hair had been dropping on the floor while she was sweeping.

On Aug 7, Nuraini slapped and punched her and also kicked her stomach in anger for washing her own clothes and the family's despite a previous reminder.

Ms Yulianti also lost about 20kg since she started working, weighing only 45kg in August 2012.

Nuraini's lawyer Sunil Sudheesan said the weight loss was not attributable to his client, a mother of three, nor her husband, but was a result of the domestic worker's dietary preference. This was compounded by her being unable to get used to the food here.

The couple have since paid compensation of $5,000 to Ms Yulianti, who has forgiven Nuraini for her actions, the lawyer added.

Nuraini, who could have been jailed for up to three years and fined up to $7,500 on each charge, was allowed to defer sentence until March 7.

Some people no chance to be boss. So when they become one, they mistook it as "King" that they can do whatever they want with their "subjects".

Such lowlife do not deserve a short sentence. Jail them for years to make them repent!
