SINGAPORE: Come August 1, Rear-Admiral (RADM) Lai Chung Han will take over from RADM Ng Chee Peng as Chief of Navy. RADM Lai is currently Deputy Secretary for Policy at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

T

he ministry announced this in a news release on Wednesday (July 2), saying the change is part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

41-year-old RADM Lai is a former SAF (Overseas) and President's Scholar. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from the University of Cambridge, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He joined the SAF in 1992 and was once commander of the RSS Valiant as well as Fleet Commander.

MINDEF paid tribute to the outgoing navy chief for his "dedicated service and sterling contributions".

It says during his term, RADM Ng laid the foundations for the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) future capabilities by operationalising new platforms such as the ARCHER-class submarines and by reorganising its operational, training and safety systems.

The 44-year-old also introduced various initiatives to better engage navy servicemen, as well as introduced public outreach efforts such as Navy@VIVO, which saw naval displays at VivoCity mall.

"Under RADM Ng's leadership, the RSN has made valuable contributions to international counter-piracy efforts and played a key role through its command of Combined Task Force 151 in the Gulf of Aden. RADM Ng also enhanced the coordination of our national maritime agencies in detecting and responding to maritime threats, by establishing and operationalising the National Maritime Security System," MINDEF said.

Anyway, once on scholarship, your path is lighted up...

And if you are one of the best, you will continue your glittering career by going into parliament.

What's so great about them?

There are already 2 eyesores that's screwing us. What's his name ask elitist questions like "what do you think?". Dan there's the genius who's obsessed with numbers like 130bhp. You all so fast forget already?

We are looking at potential "screw us over" or "screw us big time" or "screw us long time"?

What for so many military scholars in the bunch? Easier for the commander in chief? "Sir, Yes, Sir!" to his commands?

in other navy news.....S’pore may buy large ship for use in disaster zones: Dr Ng

SINGAPORE: The Republic is considering buying a ship large enough to send more helicopters to disaster zones, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said.

Speaking to the media ahead of SAF Day on Tuesday, Dr Ng said the recent Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines underlined the need for a Joint-Multi-Mission Ship (JMMS).

"A larger JMMS would be able to carry more helicopters or have more helicopters operating. When we responded to Typhoon Haiyan...basically, the typhoon was so devastating that comms and communication were knocked out. There was no centralised ability for command and control of the airspace. In that context, a ship like the JMMS would have been very useful," he said.

Dr Ng said Singapore is also working out the mechanics to be the region's coordinating centre for Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief efforts.

However, the centre should not simply respond when a crisis hits, he said. Instead, it should build networks – similar to United Nations agencies and voluntary welfare organisations – and pre-position them so that countries know where these resources are.

The minister also spoke about defence ties with the region. For Malaysia, he said bilateral exchanges are excellent, while for Indonesia, Singapore has taken “baby steps” to build up confidence and trust after the Usman Harun ship-naming incident.

Dr Ng also touched on Singapore's defence budget, saying the Republic’s spending patterns on defence are not likely to change dramatically over the next decade.

"Nominally, we've gone up, but we've kept pace with inflation. We avoid sharp spikes and we avoid deep dips because that kind of defence spending is what we have experienced and what other militaries recognise as the most productive outcome," he said.

Good chance we may see the Endurance 160 which can also house the new F35-B!
