First woman detained for radicalism in Singapore after she planned to join Islamic State

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/first-woman-detained-for-radicalism-in-singapore-after-she-8938532

SINGAPORE: Singapore has detained its first female citizen for radicalism under the Internal Security Act (ISA), said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday (June 12).

Syaikhah Izzah Zahrah Al Ansari, a 22-year-old contract infant-care assistant with the PCF (PAP Community Foundation) Sparkletots preschool programme, was detained in June this year.

Her radicalisation started in 2013 through online propaganda related to the Islamic State terrorist group, said MHA.

“She began to believe that ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) represented the true spirit of Islam. Her radicalisation deepened over time,” a press release read. “This was exacerbated by a wide network of foreign online contacts which she developed. They included ISIS militants and supporters, some of whom have either been killed in Syria or arrested for terrorism-related activities.”

Since 2014, Izzah actively posted and shared pro-ISIS material online. Several of her social media platforms were removed by administrators because of such content, but she created new ones.

MHA said Izzah was also intent on joining ISIS and was actively planning to make her way to Syria, with her young child, to do so.

“She supported ISIS’s use of violence to establish and defend its self-declared ‘caliphate’, and aspired to live in it,” said the ministry. “To this end, she said that since 2015, she was looking for ‘a Salafi or an ISIS supporter’ to marry and settle down with him and her child in Syria.”

“She said she would support her husband if he fought for ISIS in Syria as she believed she would reap ‘heavenly rewards’ if he died in battle. With her ‘elevated status’ as a ‘martyr’s widow’, she felt she could (then) easily marry another ISIS fighter in Syria.”

Izzah also said she was prepared to undergo military training and engage in armed combat to defend ISIS if called upon by the terrorist group to do so, MHA added.

Her sister and parents - who are both freelance Quranic teachers - came to know of her radical postings in 2015 and her intention to join ISIS in Syria. They did not alert the authorities and tried on their own to dissuade her, but were unsuccessful.

Izzah continued down the path of radicalism, said MHA, and in April this year, “boasted” to a contact that the Singapore authorities had not detected her.

In its press release, the MHA reiterated that importance of family members and friends to let the authorities know of anyone they suspect is being radicalised or planning terror attacks.

Australia 'disrupts terror plot' to bring down airplane

SYDNEY: Australia has foiled an Islamist-inspired "terrorist plot" to bring down an airplane with an improvised explosive, authorities said Sunday (Jul 30), after four people were arrested in raids across Sydney.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the plot appeared to be "elaborate" rather than planned by a lone wolf, as security was beefed up at major domestic and international airports across the nation.

"I can report last night that there has been a major joint counter-terrorism operation to disrupt a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane," Turnbull told reporters. "The threat of terrorism is very real. The disruption operation, the efforts overnight have been very effective but there's more work to do."

Officials did not specify if the alleged plot involved a domestic or international flight, but Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported that a local route had been the objective.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin described the plot as "Islamic-inspired", saying four men had been arrested in a series of raids across Sydney on Saturday.  "We do believe it is Islamic-inspired terrorism. Exactly what is behind this is something we need to investigate fully," he said.

Colvin added that local authorities had received "credible information from partner agencies" about the claims but would not elaborate further or state if the men were on any watch list.

"In recent days, law enforcement has become aware of information that suggested some people in Sydney were planning to commit a terrorist attack using an IED (improvised explosive device)," he told reporters.

He added that several items "of great interest to police" had been seized in the raids but police did not yet have a great deal of information on the specific attack, the location, date or time. He said the investigation was expected to be "very long and protracted".  "However, we're investigating information indicating the aviation industry was potentially a target of that attack."   Colvin would not provide further details, but the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said police found items that could be used to make a homemade bomb in one of the raided homes Saturday.  Authorities believed they planned to smuggle the device onto a plane to blow it up, the ABC added.

AIRPORT SECURITY BOOST

Four men were arrested Saturday after armed police stormed homes in at least four neighbourhoods, though their names and ages have not been released and they have not been charged by police.

The Seven Network reported 40 riot squad officers moved on a terraced house in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills, as TV footage showed a man with a bandage on his head being led away by authorities, draped in a blanket.

Sections of surrounding roads remained cordoned off on Sunday as forensic officers and investigators wrapped up and removed items from the house.

Airline passengers have meanwhile been asked to arrive at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international routes, and to limit their baggage.

"Australia has very strong safeguards in place at its airports; these changes are about making them even stronger," Australian carrier Qantas said.

Airline Virgin Australia stressed that the additional airport security measures were just "precautionary" and passengers "should not be concerned".

Turnbull said the national terror alert level, which was raised on September 2014 amid rising concerns over attacks by individuals inspired by organisations such as Islamic State, would remain at probable.

Canberra has introduced new national security laws since then, while counter-terrorism police have also made a string of arrests.

A total of 12 attacks, before the latest announcement, have been prevented in the past few years, while 70 people have been charged, Justice Minister Michael Keenan said.

"The primary threat to Australia still remains lone actors, but there's still the ability for people to have sophisticated plots and sophisticated attacks still remain a real threat," he told reporters Sunday.   The prime minister added that the alleged plan appeared to be "more in that category of an elaborate plot".

Several terror attacks have taken place in Australia in recent years, including a Sydney cafe siege in 2014 that saw two hostages killed.

Now that ISIS in Syria and Iraq got wiped out

when they go home to Australia and Indonesia

and Malaysia they will take off their nice black

uniform and we wont know who they are.

I saw this film where they carve the swastika on

the forehead of the bad Nazis. Maybe they can

think of something similar for ISIS losers so we

know who they are?

:D

Terrorists are all stupid unimaginative idiots.

Instead of always bombing aeroplanes

they should bomb the sewerage works.

Imagine every toilet not working and full

of sh1t. This is true terror. Just don't flush

your toilet for 3 days and see how bad

things can get.

:D

Don't think any religion has taught the followers to kill people.

I am sure you are right.

But so many people seems to think

they are killing in the name of their

religion. Mislead, misguided, deluded whatever

but they really think they are doing the

right thing and its what their religion wants.

We see terrorist as evil people doing bad things

They see themselves as righteous people doing

their duty and until we see things from the same

point of view we cannot defeat terrorism.

Unfortunately terrorism is fundamentally stupid or misguided people being manipulated by cleverer people in the name of religion to achieve their aims.

Actually I don't know what religion they are in up even up till now.. Cos none of the religion will encourage their followers to kill others in the name of their religion.

I also don't even know their real purpose of killing.. Haha

Singapore is so safe as there has never been a single attack. Something must have been done very right by our government which the rest of the world can only marvel at. Lets give credit where due.
