Darryn Turbocharged June 12, 2014 Share June 12, 2014 Just heard this news - I think will make some here very happy Parents who become grassroots volunteers in the hope of getting priority for their children in the Primary 1 registration exercise will have to serve twice as long as before. They will have to do at least two years of grassroots work, not one, to qualify for the benefit. - ↡ Advertisement

Darryn Turbocharged June 12, 2014 Author Share June 12, 2014 Will it help ? Honestly? I think so - PROVIDED, the Chairman is on the ball. Not sure how many are aware, but the P1 preference is not "automatic" for Grass Roots Volunteers. You still need the endorsement of the Chairman of your grass roots committee. To receive this endorsement, you are supposed to be an "active" member of the committee. For those that are volunteering solely for the benefits (damn scumbags ) it is not difficult to "fake" involvement over the period of one year - Will be much more difficult to fake it over two years though. Sosaria Twincharged June 12, 2014 Share June 12, 2014 (edited) I know it's tough to get grassroots volunteers but dangling freebies should not be the way, IMHO. It's better to have one altruistic volunteer who sincerely contributes, than ten so-called volunteers who are actually after freebies. Agree fully - that's why I think this is good - someone just there for the P1 benefit, with little interest will find it hard to fake it over two years. Already there is a method in place to track those who contribute, and those who don't do anything - so I just hope that this makes it stronger to "genuine" volunteers. Do note - although I don't think it should be "expected" by the volunteers, I also don't have too much of a problem with GENUINE volunteers being "thanked" with little, non-monetary rewards such as this. Jman888 Moderator June 12, 2014 Share June 12, 2014 a grass root volunteer is different from parent volunteer in school, which one contribute more to the school? I think grass root shouldn't get any priority at all.

Darryn Turbocharged June 12, 2014 Author Share June 12, 2014 i would rather volunteer at the school if they want me... Some schools turn away volunteers ... For some schools you are required to "write an essay" about what you can offer to the school.
Heartlander Turbocharged June 12, 2014 Share June 12, 2014 Just heard this news - I think will make some here very happy It is double whammy for those who are trying to get head-start for their kids in 5 primary schools that are doing away with parent volunteer scheme, four of them under the SHHK. Really stressful for those parents who are eyeing the schools.

Darryn Turbocharged June 12, 2014 Author Share June 12, 2014 a grass root volunteer is different from parent volunteer in school, which one contribute more to the school? I think grass root shouldn't get any priority at all. I have a bit of a problem with the term "Parent Volunteer"... I think is should be renamed to "Free Slave Labour". Remember - to get the privilege you must "serve your time" PRIOR to enrollment - so while you are helping the school, your kid is not even attending. That seems a bit illogical to me.... It is double whammy for those who are trying to get head-start for their kids in 5 primary schools that are doing away with parent volunteer scheme, four of them under the SHHK. Really stressful for those parents who are eyeing the schools. What is SHHK? Doing away with parent volunteer scheme? Is that allowed? What is the reasoning (I didn't hear about it - is there somewhere I can read more?) edited title in case ppl cannot understand kiwi language Hee...I bees speaking da engrish....but sometimes not well
