I overtrade my old car by 6K + scrap value. That time i think they are aggressively trying to sell more cars.

Hi everyone,

I've been considering a small MPV to fit two child seats + maid and sometimes in-laws. Due to budgetary reasons I cannot consider new cars yet, thanks to the 50% downpayment rule. Was considering a Wish/Sienta/Stream until I came across a MPV/SUV thread somewhere here.

Is it a good idea to get an 8-9 year old Mazda 5? Probably in terms of general reliability.

Thanks.

If I am you, I will bring along a mechanic to check out the vehicle.  This are the things that wear out in the Mazda5.

1. Engine mounts

2. Gearbox

3. Fuel pump

4. Alternator

5. Suspension colis

Good luck.

SSW is a good brand. I used them on my previous car and have no issue. However i recommend to fork out more for Rjays as they can be sold in the 2nd hand market. also they are lighter and more durable. The design is nice though.

Hey hitlerson21, thanks for your views! Well, I finally decided to take the plunge and settled on those SSW rims, here are some pics to share! Personally I'm quite pleased with the overall result, although this is just the first step.

After driving for just a day, I can feel that the car's unsprung mass has been reduced noticeably. Pick up and braking has improved, and so has cornering stability due to the wider tyres (215/45/17). One point to note, these CSC5 tyres seem to generate slightly more noise than the Toyo ones, which is not good. Let me know what you guys think about the mod, any views are welcome!

Thanks bro. I'm quite a noob to be very frank. Are these considered bad enough such that if I have to replace these later on, it will not make sense to get a Mazda5? The gearbox seems troublesome at first glance.

Actually, I think most cars would have wear and tear by the time they are 8-9 years old, not just Mazda5... So depending on your luck, you might find one that is very well maintained with low mileage, and still can drive it until end of COE, or you might find yourself spending so much money replacing parts such that you could have easily gotten a newer/better car in the first place.

Not my own experience, but I have friends who did end up having so much problems after they bought a 8-9 years old car that they sold it after a few months.

Thanks man. That is what I somewhat fear as well. Is it irrational to consider that I would have better luck shopping at one of the more reputed dealers like Henly?

Luck plays a more important role as compared to reputable used car dealer for a 8-9 years old car.

You buy such a car. Any replacement tt cost more than 1k to repair, i think you can scrap it already? Dont really make sense to repair a dying car. Cos you wun know whats next in next 2 months. But if can live with the problem n car still can drive. Then tongggg

Here's the Eurokar quote and outside workshop prices for replacing/fixing :AS these are over the years, prices may have changed since.

1. Engine mounts : EK : $700, WS : $350 every 1.5 years.

2. Gearbox : EK : $14K, WS : Recond unit $4.5K

3. Fuel pump : EK $1.2K

4. Alternator : EK : $700, WS : Recond unit $250

5. Suspension colis : EK $300 each

Most major components will fail by high mileage. Cars that are beyond 150km would expect some major repairs like what other bros said.

Nevertheless, expect accessories failures when the car is near 9 years old, regardless of mileage. Example: cabin clock LCD fails, door lock jammed, CD player not working, etc.

Some rule of thumb for shortlisting of used cars: 100K mileage, 1 owner, service record, accident-free.

It does sound like the gearbox is a problem. Just wondering - is this something which an AA inspection should be able to pick up? The rest I can stomach I guess.

Thanks again :)

Appreciate the tip on shortlisting. The mileage and accident record sometimes can be fudged right? But I guess it's a good starting point.  :a-good:
