August 5th, 2014 | Author: Contributions I refer to the article “Unemployment rates in Q2 hold steady amid tight labour market: MOM” (Channel NewsAsia, Jul 31). Only Singaporeans unemployment rate increase? It states that “Preliminary estimates released by the ministry’s Research and Statistics Department on Thursday (July 31) showed that the overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rates remained at 2.0 per cent – similar to that of the first quarter. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for citizens stayed constant at 3.0 per cent, while resident unemployment rate improved slightly from 2.9 per cent to 2.8 per cent over the same period, according to the figures.” Only Singaporeans hardest hit by unemployment? What do the above statistics mean? That only the unemployment rate of citizens did not improve? Does it mean that Singaporeans found it harder to get jobs relative to PRs and foreigners? Since foreigners are all on employment pass, S-pass or work permits – there is in a sense, hardly any unemployment amongst foreigners. 95% of jobs growth went to foreigners? The number of unemployed Singaporeans in June increased by 20,900 from 52,300 in March to 73,200 in June. Since employment growth for the second quarter was 22,000 – does it mean that about 95% (20,900 divided 22,000) of the increase in jobs went to non-Singaporeans? If so, what ever happened to the consistent rhetoric in recent years about “Singaporeans First” and curtailing the influx of foreigners? What’s the point of the relentless chase for jobs growth when most of the jobs don’t go to Singaporeans? S Y Lee and Leong Sze Hian P.S. DavidOh 5th Gear August 7, 2014 Share August 7, 2014 I see it this way .... there will come a point the tolerance limit of Singaporeans is reached especially when their basic needs are affected, at this point, what happens next will be anyone guess, why? because all these while we are within our comfort zone despite the pain that is experience, the upper middle and upper income are generally not affected partly because their wealth can withstand the harsh reality and they can be very mobile that leaves the low and lower middle income groups, which seems as a group not very vocal, my guess is they are working their butts out to make ends meet and hence no tirme even to complain the trend seems to point to attaining an elitist society, perhaps we are moving towards the Indian cast system of the untouchables (unseen) and ...... Whether this is true or not, we have to wait another 5-10years but there are signs already written on the wall the question should be, what are we going to do about it, or are going to anything about it?

Vinceng Turbocharged March 31, 2017 Share March 31, 2017 Japan is the direct opposite of Singapore, where Foreigners make up just 2% of the population. The Japanese are still surviving well without the influx of foreigners. Singapore must be in a very unique situation http://news.asiaone.com/news/asia/foreigners-japan-face-significant-levels-discrimination-survey-shows
Victor68 Turbocharged March 31, 2017 Share March 31, 2017 1st I am not sure of the data. 2nd, 3% or 90% also depend on how the citizens are coping. if we dont have jobs, then even 3% is a problem. Those countries with reach natural resources, they can continue to throw money. wait till they one day become begger, then they know they are being unfair to their next generations

Sosaria Twincharged April 1, 2017 Share April 1, 2017 (edited) There is a "skills gap" now. This much is true. There will be too many degree holders jobless and many jobs that require specialised skills left unfilled. Skills future is supposed to address this mismatch. But it doesn't solve the problem of low salaries offered for these so-called specialised skills jobs !! How to survive in the most expensive city in the world? Staff69 Hypersonic April 2, 2017 Share April 2, 2017 (edited) dear parents. the best thing you could ever give to your children is not monies or properties but a good solid education so that they could be free to live their life to the fullest. the propaganda posters will has its effect. perhaps sealing the fate of children from under privileged families. having received resumes from overseas candidates. all are equip with a minimum degree if not a diploma .yes. even a diploma from university of prata or university of online training. well still counts. even if your kid decided to be a hawker. let him be an educated one, to say the least. the little course i went recently, the biggest reward i got out from it was international business connections and yes, my current squeeze. shu qu (lookalike ) Edited April 2, 2017 by Staff69

Perhaps make them stop at O levels or even N levels to have a taste of reality of finding a proper job in Singapore?
