Filipino group drops plan to hold Orchard Road event

Organisers of a planned Philippine Independence Day celebration here have withdrawn their application to hold it at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

The event was to have taken place at the Orchard Road site on June 8.

The police told The Straits Times that the withdrawal follows public order and safety concerns about the venue proposed by its organisers - the Pilipino Independence Day Council Singapore (PIDCS).

Said a police spokesman: "Police had also advised the organisers to consider alternative locations used previously for the event, such as Hong Lim Park in 2013 and Suntec City in 2012."

Very much in two minds about this -

You have to wonder how much the decision had to do with the threats of violence that were a result of all the on-line commentary.

There have been similar events held at Taka before, and for an event to be denied a permit for this sort of reasoning....

On the other hand, there quite obviously were some threats received - whether credible and fair or not...I dunno.

But my further question would be - if Orchard Road cannot take the crowd - why can somewhere like Hong Lim? Seems as though politics is partially at play here, which is a shame.

Wat a waste for the withdrawal.. MIW self pawn averted.... would have been funny with the throngs of pinoy waving their flags walking down Orchard road... CNN coverage would be icing on the cake... looks like someone in MIW still got a little common sense.

Tio reject say tio rejected lah. Why must say group withdraw application and police advised them to hold somewhere else.

The application is either approved or rejected. Even if polis were to suggest something else, polis must still reject current application first right? before the group re-submit application again?

In a sense. Sense of self-preservation, more like (they don't want to lose votes over this). That's quite a common sense, actually. :D

EDIT: Actually, looks more like someone in the SPF has a sense of self-preservation. SPF and MIW are not the same thing. Remember, they have to cover their own backsides too! If there's trouble, they will have to take action and no matter what happens, they will be answerable for it.

You think it is a good thing that politics was the decider* and not "public order"?

* Note - if indeed it was politics, which we can't be sure of, even if it appears that way to a cynic like me.

There are 3 trays on the table: Approve, Reject, and KIV.

So, I guess the form is in KIV, stored in the freezer, till the whole thingy die down...

Hopefully, with this thing die down, the pilipinos will learn and tone down their celebrations.

They can celebrate, but don't make it a hoo-hah event.

Go somewhere celebrate, or can celebrate in their embassy.

Hopefully they can learn to appreciate our concerns, and accept with grace.
