Improvement to the 3rd Brake Light

I was thinking, currently the 3rd brake light only gives a 'on' and 'off' indication, but does not reflect the intensity of braking force. Therefore, while traveling on the expressway we do not know the car in front when the brake is it a light tap to slow down or hard braking. Possible improvement I'm thinking was a 3rd brake light which would reflect whether the brake is a light tap or emergency brake, by the length of the lighted 3rd brake light. IF it is a light tap to slow down, 1 foot length of 3rd brake light showing. If moderate braking, 2 feet length of 3rd brake light showing. IF its a emergency brake, full 3 feet length of 3rd brake light would show. If there is such a 3rd brake light I believe the accident would reduce, because people would not hard brake unintentionally because he can see whether the car in front is a light tap or hard brake. Does such a 3rd brake light exist?

How about a rear-distance sensor which will activate hazard lights (to alert / irritate the driver behind) if the car behind is staying too close to you rear bumper? [:)]

Driver behind shd buy those cars with sensors to tell them they are driving too close to the cars in front. Onus is not on those in front to protect the cars behind.

Agree

Sadly many drivers are not interested to spend money on such safety features to alert them that they need to keep a safe distance. [sweatdrop]

This may sound silly, but i wont mind having the rear-sensor to wake up the driver behind me if he follows too close, for my own good (who would like someone to rear-end his car?). [:)]

But by warning the car behind that he is too close is protecting himself. Who wants to get into an accident?

Or just install a switch to turn on the brake lights. The previous owner of my old car did that. Can turn on the brake lights anytime without stepping on the brake pedal.

[thumbsup] [thumbsup] bloody good idea!!

btw, what kind of car is it that the previous owner needed the switch? A car with very strong / effective brakes? [sweatdrop] [sweatdrop]

In heavy but fast traffic eg when cars going at say 90kmh like in a convoy / trains, even while maintaining safe gap between cars, it is better to be able to see if the cars ahead (not just the one immediately in front) are braking.

If i am driving a big size vehs eg SUV i am likely to block the view of the driver behind ie he cant see the brake lights of the car in front of me. A friend taught me to stay slightly staggered to the right or left of the car in front, this will give some space for the driver behind me to see the tail lights of the car in front of me. [:)]

Staggered in the lane is good for car drivers but not so for motorcycle as they likes to go between the lanes. Need to keep a constant watch out for them to avoid accident.

i'm sorry but I don't really understand the need to have such special high tech 3rd brake light technology.

yes I agree it's fanciful and does probably contribute better awareness of how hard the car infront is braking..

but ain't driving all about good judgement? if you can't judge the required braking effort, then why are you in the first place staying so close?

if such technology was really to become widespread, I believe we will see cars tailgating each other even closely assuming they now have better warning system..

i learnt not to relay on brake lights too much.

I slammed into 1 Rover 75 years ago as all the bugger's brake lightsare not working.

Now drivers need car manufactor to design to warn others?

Why dont learn from mistakes?

To be honest i have such an idea for some time as well and it is really not hard to implement (technically) to a vehicle... but thinking it will be rather useless as it will be non standard indication, so drivers will not know what all these long short lights translate into unless there is mass implementation and drivers are educate to this idea.

those buggers that drive in lane 1 that always constantly brake for no reason already need to be shot. If u make this, every road will kenna ERP for dropping below "acceptable" speed.

It's a double-edged sword. If your brake light intensified under hard braking and someone banged you.......... he will claim you zham brake.

I have came across cars with all break lights spoiled, so I rather better keep a safe distance than depends on 3rd light

Normal car. Just a corona. Quite effective. The tailgaters will leave a bigger gap after a while when they notice the brake lights always on. Or can give warning by flashing the brake lights without having to slow down. But dunno legal or not.

Drivers should just keep a safe distance. With the 2s gap, even if the front car's brake lights not working and he e-brake the driver behind should be able to react in time to stop.
