On Thursday, the Public Transport Council (PTC) said fares will go up by 3.2 per cent from April 6, which means every journey by adult commuters will cost four to six cents more.

"The timing is most unfortunate, but the decision was made by the PTC...this is not an SMRT decision...The decision was taken in the full view of affordability to commuters, but also in recognition that there are operating costs that have to go into the kinds of repairs and maintenance," he said.

so fast play taiji already?:huh:

service quality <> fare hikes?

ask this question in any commercial industry ... no need to guess also know what is the answer

they will tell u that without fare hike, the service will be even worse

so they are incrementally raising fare to see where the sweet spot is. same principle as LHL's story of slow boiling a frog

A train fault occurred on the North-South Line that caused an estimated 20 minutes delay on the North-South Line today.

About 19,000 commuters were affected by the peak-hour delay, said train operator SMRT at a briefing.

According to a report in The Straits Times, the train fault occurred at Ang Mo Kio station.

At about 8.54am, an announcement was made asking all passengers to alight at Ang Mo Kio. Bus services were activated between Woodlands and Bishan.

Even after train services at Yio Chu Kang station resumed, passengers are advised to provision for additional 10 minutes of travel time from Ang Mo Kio and Marina Bay stations.

In a separate incident, A blackout hit parts of Outram Park MRT station this morning (Jan 20), and commuters made their way through the station in relative darkness with some using their phones to light the way.

STOMPer lokolalu was among the commuters who were affected by the blackout, and said commuters had to use their phone's light to help them see while they walked.

SMRT said in a statement on their Facebook page that the delay is due to a signal fault near Ang Mo Kio station.

SMRT also said that free bus bridging are available. STOMPers William, AshenWind, and milankaka wrote in to STOMP with photos of the crowds.

William felt it would make more sense to focus on fixing the increasingly frequent train disruptions and delays, before implementing a fare hike.

AshenWind likened the sight of a huge crowd at an MRT station to a scene at a club, while milankaka wrote: "SMRT train breakdown again."

A contributor to AsiaOne at Yio Chu Kang station reported of long queues and a lack of announcements.

Another contributor told AsiaOne that a 10 minutes delay was initially broadcasted to passengers at Bishan MRT station.

This delay was later extended to 20 minutes in a later announcement. Passengers were advised to take the bus or circle line if they were heading to town.

Users posting on SMRT's Facebook page complained of being delayed for more than 45 minutes.

19,000? So few ppl taking public transpork to work? Or is it 190,000?

PTC is right that fare hike and breakdowns are separate issues

fare hike money goes to the pockets of the top executives and shareholders. This is because wages have to be in line with inflation.

breakdowns will continue due to under budgeting in maintenance

i think singaporeans have misunderstood that hike in fare was meant to address service issue.

Fare is a tax and has nothing to do with breakdowns???

They fought a losing battle so now they trying to disassociate the fares we pay from the service we receive.

So next time hotels wil do the same. They quote us 5 star prices but only give 3 star service n ammenities.

I can imagine where this is leading to. Hawker centre charge hotel prices. [:|]

PTC is really a joke, will justify for any fare increase.

Is their salary wasting tax payer's money?

Not according to them. In fact as long as they tow the line, they wil start demanding more pay. Just like the Ministers n MPs.

How much they pay for each act? [sly]

Depends on how convincing ty are.

For that schoolboy, I doubt he was paid anything cos the whole issue was made into a big joke.

tuck yew tuck, where are yew

He smart. He knows when its better to b out of pples view.

I agree with PTC: Fare hikes and breakdowns are indeed two separate issues.

Fare hikes is for the operator to make money.

It doesn't mean any less breakdowns.

So go suck thumb.

I remember that when there is no PTC, fare is much better.

It's only when there is this PTC then fare keep on going up and very fast.
