Little india riot

If we didn't engineer our system such that menial jobs are shunned & looked down upon with depressed wages, more locals who are not as academically blessed would have taken up such jobs. In this case, there would have been a lot less reliance on FW for bldg housing. The contractors are basically still maintaining their S Class income by squeezing the bottom. In the end, the official message is, we need FW because locals don't want these jobs. Then how, approach union more help? that's another lost cause...

Contractor have S class income? Wow.

Then Poh Lian Construction shouldn't have went bankrupt this year right?

Not to mention the 2 MRT related construction companies, Alpine Bau and Samdaiyang Development.

since we need FWs, i suggest providing various services at FW dorms in order to encoruage them to stay in:

1) cheap ciggi (sold as single stick and must light up when sold)

2) cheap beer (but must open up immediately)

3) cheap massage [grin]

4) free movie

If construction worker here is paid their those in other 1st world countries, many locals may take up.

Its due to immensely depressed wages for labour jobs that locals don't want to take.

As for price of land used for public housing, till today, even after many people/parties ask, the answer has been more than grey.

ha ha ha .. i like your idea..

then..our property prices will go up 2-3 fold... :)

You also drink too much issit ?

I am glad it happens ............ the police is complacent and they need some "real live" situation to test them. IMO, they fail miserably.

I hate to drive around Little India and after this incident, I would avoid the place completely ...... dont know when it will happen again and sway sway if kena struck in a middle of the mob .....

I would say, after this incident, Little India will be the safest place to visit in Singapore.

This is a terrible, tragic turn of events. But it's not wholly unexpected. Trouble with various groups of FWs have been brewing for some time. The last publicised standoff between a group of foreign nationals and the local authorities was the PRC bus driver strike. Of course, this latest incident is far more deplorable, involving violence and death as it did.

It's very easy to place all the blame on the involved FWs. But we have to take a step back and ask whether anything could've been done to prevent this from ever happening. The government goes on and on with rhetoric about "integration". But it becomes mere lip service if integration is not aimed at all socio-economic strata, and doesn't cover every aspect of daily living.

For instance, obeying traffic laws in Singapore. This could have been properly addressed a long time ago. The police could've come down hard on jaywalkers. Even if catching and penalising every single one of them wasn't possible, they could've caught enough of them and made a severe example (jail/deportation with blacklisting) to have warned future offenders. Even better, they could've imposed sanctions against the employers for not educating their workers enough - that often works better because the employers are locals and have nowhere to run to. If jaywalking had been severely dealt with at the appropriate time, this whole sorry incident might never have transpired. But the Singapore authorities seems to be largely reactive rather than proactive of late.

There are many other steps that could've been taken - banning night time sales of alcohol, severely punishing public inebriation, etc. But the authorities were remiss in not acting on all these potential triggers, and now this incident has ignited everyone's shock and outrage like a spark to a powder-keg. But a dispassionate observer should recognise that the flashpoint was a long time coming.

Now, at least, I hope proper action is taken, both to hunt down and punish severely the perpetrators involved. I also hope thought is put into how to prevent things like this from ever happening again. And there are other potential flashpoints - violence (sexual violence included) against women. To pre-empt this, the government should look into implementing culture-appropriate counselling on behaving properly toward women, whether they be local or foreign women, etc. We don't want even uglier incidents to catch us by surprise tomorrow.

No one say to let them get away. But shooting at them during riots might not be the best solution.

The Singapore mentality … "Hitting me once justifies my action for Hitting you back Twice…"

"2 Wrong doesn't make a right" … One fellow bro reminded me of this fact ...

The Root of the problem is in the FT Policies, it is time to re-evaluate ...
